Sounds like the bolt guide!
Its a known problem with the L579.. and the reason I got rid of mine. Would hate to see that happen on a hunt! |

You guys are GREAT
Well,
you guys came through again, the bolt guide that I just installed had moved forward. Kevin, you mention that by installing the internal spring clip upside down, this can happen? I will have to remove the guide and check this spring again. My question to you, have you came up with a good way of compressing this spring to remove the guide? I've been shooting and fooling with Sako rifles for maybe 16 years now, not long compared to some of you guys, but I've only tried to remove or install a bolt guide twice that I can remember. It is a PITA and I'm afraid I'm going to break the retaining spring each time. Northman, thanks for your help, I've owned maybe 6 different L579's, and I've never experienced this problem before. Thanks guys, Stan |

Sorry about that - my silly - of course he used the dovetails.
I've had 2 Swedish Mausers come to my attention by co-workers with their bolts locked with screws - it was the first thing to mind- but shojuld not have been. I've had 2 579's and currently am shooting an A1 - DOH!

Stan..........
Once you move the boltguide to the rear, the bolt should open. Remove the bolt from the action. Rotate the boltguide slightly counter-clockwise, in order to clear the right bolt lug. Push the boltguide forward again(since it is not locked in position, lengthwise).......it should then easily pop away from the bolt.
Sent you a PM. Kevin |

I've been a Sako collector & enthusiast for several decades & have NEVER heard of this "known problem". The cause was the bolt guide was reassembled incorrectly, which is hardly a reason to blame the rifle. As the bolt guide is the same on the L461 & the L61R (only a different size) is it also a "known problem" for these rifles as well? Can you substantiate or give any documentation to back up your statement about this being a "known problem". BTW, if you ever want to "get rid" of any Sakos, I'll be glad to take them off your hands.

Its a know problem with the L579.. But rarely heard about it with the L461 or L61R.
I belive it is something to do with the spring clip ( sorry for my english ) that holds the bolt guide that breaks leaving the bolt in a locked position. The L579 is more prone, because it only has one such clip to hold the bolt guide, where the L461 & L61R has two. If installed incorrectly it will also lock, but easily fixed. This is in scandinavia.. |

After about seven dozen L461/AI's.......
.....over the years.......I'm pretty sure the boltguide is retained by only one circular ring, with either a pin or internal spring clip.
