Default 224 Valkyrie and Rock Chucks

Added a photo of two rock chucks taken with the new 224 Valkyrie I put together a month ago. So far shooting very nicely. 55 grain bullets thus far, will work up some loads with 70-80 grain bullets, for some shooting beyond 400 yards.. Very pleasant shooting rifle/cartridge. Think it is going to replace all my 223/5.56 rifles. Adding a 20 inch barrel to a AR, for semi-auto shooting. Bill K ( The photo is in my picture/album under community at top of header)

Very nice. Looks like a pretty fat tube on that rifle.

What brand of barrel and twist?

It is .0927 four inches back from the muzzle, pretty straight contour, 18 inch, SS, Xcaliber barrel with 1/8 twist. Bill K

"Took" not sure where you are talking about, if I used that term, but if so more than likely say I "Took" or shot a critter. Bill K

Bill K, have you done any testing on the 224 Valkyrie? I'd be curious to know the velocities you get with bullets under 60 grains.

Default 224 Valkyrie and Rock Chucks

With the 55 grain soft points by Midsouth Shooters ( Varmint nightmares) and a charge in the area of 29 grain of CFE 223, they are running in the 3150 fps area. Have not checked the other heavier bullets, but they should be in and around 2900 or so. In time, when it warms I will know more, for sure. Bill K ( I think I can expect some increase in FPS with the 55 grain by going up some on the charge, but this load is pretty darn accurate and has done a decent job of taking out chucks and coyotes, I may just stick with it. )

Thanks for the info Bill. Given that velocity with the 55's out of a Valkyrie I may try the 50's out of a 20 tac and see if I can get a higher velocity. I am looking for something fast and flat out of an AR for night hunting coyotes and other varmints.

Oh you can get much higher FPS with the 20 Tac or even the 22-250, with lighter bullets. Where the 224 Valkyrie starts out doing some others, is when you get into the 70-90 grain bullets and longer range. In a AR even the 22 Nosler will give higher with the 50-55 grain bullets and it is a easy AR fix, a upper and 6.8 magazine and you are set to go. Bill K
