17 Tactical
Can someone help my simple mind understand the differences between the:
.17 Fireball .17/223 .17 Tactical |

17 Fireball is built by necking down a 221 Fireball to 17 caliber.
17/223 is built by necking down a 223 Remington to 17 caliber. 17 tactical is built by necking down a 223 Remington to 17 caliber. 17 Tac and 17/223 are basically the same for the purposes of answering the question. |

More on the 17/223 & 17 Tac.
While the 17/223 is merely a 223 Remington case necked down to hold a .17 caliber bullet, the 17 Tac has a steeper shoulder angle and case shoulder is a bit wider causing less body taper thus holding a bit more powder. Not enough powder to make a whole lot of difference though. So like tds_felix said, basically the same thing.

You may as well throw a 17 Remington in there.
Maybe a smidge lighter than the Tac in fps Some what more FPS than the 17 FB. From what I read here is the bigger 17s are good medicine for coyote. Kenny

For coyote under 350 yards, I go with my 17 rem(29 gr hp). I just do not want to sew hides. I am running 3950 ish, under max book load and no excessive pressure signs. This is with a 26 inch Lilja barrel. Anybody with some 29 gr Woodchuck Den bullets they aren't shooting anymore, I will buy them and put fur on stretchers with them. Mike.

Thanks for the info. Seems there is a lot of chatter on the .17 Rem. and Fireball and a little on the .17/223 but I hear nothing on the 17 Tactical.

17s
I have shot a few coyotes with a 25 gr Berger in 17 Rem. It was "lights out" very quickly, but the bullet placement was in the chest broadside or facing me.
I have had mixed results with the 17FB on coyotes. Havn't lost any, but there were some tracking jobs, again with the 25 gr Berger. |

The .17 Tactical can push the .172 caliber bullets out real fast, but it can be a real barrel burner. I went with that caliber because I wanted to be able to push the 30 gr. bullets out at around 3,900 to 4,000 fps. I achieved the 3,900 to 4,000 fps, but I burned out one barrel on my .17 Tactical in about 500 shots!!! Perhaps I had a barrel that was a lemon??? Anyway, that was an expensive lesson.
That's not to say the .17 Remington can't be a barrel burner too, but I try to keep my loads well below the maximum. I have both calibers and prefer the .17 Remington. The .17 Tactical rifle has a new barrel and I'll keep the loads way off the maximum load level to see if I can get more than 500 rounds out of it!!!

Ouch!
Looks like that comes to $1.00 per shot + ammo cost!
No wonder there aren't too many of those around!

Yikes, that is about the worst barrel life of any caliber I have ever heard of? I have 2,000 round through my .17 Fireball with no accuracy loss.
Is the .17/223 also a horrible barrel burner? Quote:
