New 20 Vartarg
A few months ago, I posed a caliber dilemma (17HH, 17FB, or 20VT) and got lots of great advice. I ruled out the 17FB quickly and had almost decided on a 17 Hornet. However, after some thinking and wanting to try my hand at tinkering, wildcatting and gunsmithing since I had some time on my hands, what the heck, I ordered up stuff for a VT!.
I decided to try a Criterion 24" VT SS Varmint weight Remage barrel, ordered a Rem 700 action, found a Hogue stock, and contributed the rest from my parts box and came real close to my $700 budget - for parts! Scope, barrel wrench, Go gauge, and fixtures were, well, more - but that doesn't count on the price of the gun right. My wife and I put it together last week, I loaded up a few rounds (see my post in loads section) and tried it out today. No apparent headspace issues or pressure signs!!! Results - I was hoping for a little more velocity but I can work on that. Accuracy was OK - Minute of prairie dog, but I will tweak that also! 32 grain Nosler H4198 17.5 grain averaged 3471 0.745" group 18 grains averaged 3528 0.52" group 18.5 grains averaged 3605 1.1" group Thanks for the caliber input, and like I was told - I'll end up with a 17HH somewhere along the way I'm sure! |

20 vt
good job on the budget. I also have a CBI remage barrel but in 20p and love it.
are you have any ejecting problem? one of my vt's is on a rem 40x chassis and it wouldn't eject, so I finally gave up and pulled the ejector. single shot feed anyway so it works for me. |

Smitty, what sort of trigger do you have in your "build?"

Oh - I forgot to include that misery. For budget reasons, it is the issue Remington X Mark Pro trigger. No creep, no over travel but the biggest piece of crap trigger I have ever come across. "Adjustable" from 6lbs down to 5 and no more - looking to ask Santa for a Timney or Trigger Tech.

Getting a half inch group out of a heavy and probably creepy trigger takes a little doing, you should be congratulated!
Given any thought to Rifle Basix? I've used them in my Savages and am well pleased with them. |

I love my shilen trigger on the reminder 700. Great price smooth and low poundage.

I'll check out Rifle Basix and Shilen. I think the group had a lot of luck included!

Update - Santa brought me a Shilen trigger (actually two!). He found them for $49 - I used a safety and bolt release off of an old trigger and tuned it to 2lbs. Too cold (for me) to shoot now, but I will report when the results!
Thanks for the recommendations! FYI Midsouth has Rifle Basix on clearance for $99 |
