I have 3 17 AH guns. A T/C Contender with a bullberry barrel, a Wessinger Ruger with a shielen barrel and a cooper classic model 38. The T/C and the Wessinger chambers allow the brass to interchange but I cannot full length size the cooper brass enough to chamber in the other two. It is not even close as the brass hangs up at about 2/3 of the way into the chamber. It is not a problem as I segregate the brass any way.

Got a Ruger 77/22 but fited a PacNor SS pre chambered barrel in 17A/H for it and a Redding 3 die set for forming brass got no problems with forming and chambering WW,R&P,RWS,Hornady,PPU brass somebody mentioned rim thickness 22h rim thickness is supposed to be 0.065+0.007" the thickest rip i have measured on all the mentioned cases was 0.061" so i dont think the rim thickness could be the problem but i have never had any Nosler brass
As an after thought try a case formed in another die set if somebody lives close enough at least it might eliminate if your chamber is faulty Last edited by wally bennett; 09-24-2017 at 02:44 PM. Reason: spelling and an after thought |

I cut a .17HH chamber in a Handi rifle to .063 thinking this, and ran into some cases that were a little thicker than this, and it would not properly latch, causing vertical stringing. My Ruger is also cut at .063, but so far have been able to close the bolt, but some have been pretty tight. I figured with the Ruger, I would file off a thou or 2 in a fixture to uniform rim thickness if needed.

Unfortunately, I'm not getting these cases into the chamber enough for rim thickness to play a part. I'll pick up a bag of winchester hornet brass. If that doesn't work, I might have to rent a reamer and open the chamber up a bit.

17 Ackley chamber too tight ?
I could be wrong here, or not thinking about this correctly, but if you ream the chamber larger, and fire those rounds in it, will then not then also be larger, at the base and you will still have the small problem ?
I would think you need to come up with a small base die, or work the brass into the die you have already, to size it down to fit and work in your chamber, not be opening the chamber/base more than it already is. Bill K |

The chamber is too tight for even virgin 22 hornet brass at the base, so opening it up with a little larger 17 ackley reamer would at least allow me to get pre-fireformed brass into the chamber. Once the brass is fireformed, I'll probably just neck size anyway. If the winchester brass doesn't work, I'm not sure what I can do other then ream it out a little.

This may not help, but....
Wildcat 17 hornet cartridges are of MANY different sizes. 17AH, 17Hornet, and 17 K-Hornet have been chambered in shoulder angle and case dimensions of various sizes. Is the rifle actually stamped "17 AH" 17AH and K- and even some Kimber sizes use 25, 30, 35 and 40 degree shoulder and the dies need to match the particular original chamber. I'm just pointing out that the variation in chambers out there, do not necessarily match up with common dies. Nomenclature of "17 Ackley Hornet", or "17AH" on chambers and dies does not mean they are interchangeable. And, on older rifles, chances are pretty good that newly acquired Dies and older Chambers will differ. Just some thoughts on this....Been in similar shoes in this situation.... Bill

welcome, do a chamber cast (serosafe) and start measuring. the dies may not match the chamber, way to many versions of the 17 hornet out to know which one you have. I like some others have a few shell holders that have been shaved down.
