New 20 VT and H4198
Ok - so I got my 20 VT together - The farther I go - the more questions come up! I got some reworked LC brass and turned the necks to end up with .228 or .229 neck in a loaded round. I started the H4198 loads at 18 grains with the intention to slowly work to 19 or so. Some cases would over flow and not hold 18 grains!!?? So by trial and error I found enough that would hold 17.5, 18 and 18.5 grains to get started. I suspected varying case thicknesses and after weighing 100, they varied from 85 to 90 grains (with Primer) with the average of 87.5 grains. Is this normal reworked LC brass? If I necked down 221FB would I see this much variation of volume?
32 grain Nosler 17.5 grain averaged 3471 0.745" group 18 grains averaged 3528 0.52" group 18.5 grains averaged 3605 1.1" group I will tighten these up as I tweak the COL but was looking for 3650-3700 FPS - should I go for a more dense powder like AA2200 or AA1680? thanks |

20 vt load
I have three vartargs and they all shoot the same load 20.8gr of 2200 behind a 32 zmax. of course you would want to work up to that. I did have a problem shooting pdogs in 100 degree days with one gun and a new batch of powder. so I am going to work up that load again. you will have a lot of people tell you that 2200 is THE powder for a vt and I am one of them. by the way that load gets you about 4000 fps

New 20 VT and H4198
I go along with ChuckShooter on that. 20.3 to 20.8 grains with the 32 grain bullet ( I use z-max or Varmeggedon/tipped) and with A2200 it does all I want as for FPS and Accuracy. Start in the low range and work up in your rifle.
Hard to bet A2200 in the 20VT or 20SCC. Bill K |

20 Vartarg load
I use 19.5 gr of aa2200 and 39gr BK's and get 3670fps. Start at 18.0 grs and work up. I use 19.0gr of 4198 with 32gr Nosler BT and get 3800fps using Nosler Brass. Good luck

Smitty, using LC cases, you will find a little less case capacity that you would with reformed commercial cases, and that capacity could and would vary between headstamps. I'd suggest to use what you have -- your weight variation isn't all that much, but maybe separate out a batch that will give you one grain, plus or minus, and see if you get any really noticeable difference. Most of the .20VT shooting I've done has been with random weight reformed LC , varying years, and they work fine. I consider the cartridge to be sensitive, and use .2 grain increments for workups. I got some really good results with the Midsouth Varmint Nightmare Extreme bullets. Sierra 32's have been the best, but for the money, I could shoot the Midsouth bullets all day and be pleased.

For my high volume sagerat shooting I use nothing but the midsouth bullets in my 17 and 20 cals.

I find very little weight variation in FULLY prepped LC cases formed to 20VT. Case capacity is a little less than others, it's just robust brass. I use H4198 exclusively for the VT. I worked up to and settled on 18.7 grains and the velocity is running 3,775 fps. Plenty fast for me, and superb accuracy. All of the above with 32 grain V-Max bullets.
On Edit: For me, the powder is 1/3-1/2 of the way into the neck with H4198. Last edited by ramos; 08-18-2017 at 03:29 PM. Reason: add |

My Vartarg did ok with H4198, but much better with RL-7 or AA 1680 and either Hornady V-Max or Sierra BK in 32 gr. form. Mine seems to shoot well with several types of brass, just minor tweaks to load depending on brass manufacturer.
