.17 Rem and W760 fast lot of powder??
I recently had my 17 Remington rebarreled with a lilja barrel with a 1/9 twist finished at 24". I went out several weekends ago and shot with 30gr. nagel bullets and varget powder. I worked up to max with 22.5 grs of this powder and got an average of 3650 fps.
I went out today and used W-760 and started from 25.4 grns. Once I got up to 25.7 I was getting and average of 3740 fps. I then tried 26 grns and got a three shot average of over 4000 fps!! I thought I better stop there but I was not getting any shiny extraction marks or stiff bolt lifts. I just wondered if any of you had any similar experience with this powder? I also used benchmark and worked up to 21.8 grns. of powder and was getting over 3900 fps. I know max is 22 grns of benchmark and 27 grns of W-760. I was using R-P brass, 7.5 primer, 30 gr Nagel bullets and seating -.010 off the lands. Accuracy was best with 760 but the velocities were way up there. I know these arent max loads but I was getting high velocties with both 760 and bench mark, just wondered if you had the same experiences with various powders? I run 760 in my 17-204 and used it in my 17 Remington. I think what you are seeing is about right, as I recall with 30gr bullets 27gr is max and about as much as will fit in a case. My load was 25.6gr in my 17 Rem. Larry

My 9 twist Lilja barrel in 17 Rem. likes 26.6gr. of H414 which is the same as W760. So I would say you are right on the money with your load, but I must say, 4000 with a 30gr. in a 17 Rem. is way better than I thought it would be.

Had a 17 Bac in the mid 90's 2520 gave the fastest velocity with the ABSOLUTE best accuracy

I also had extremely good accuracy with 2520 in my 17 Remington, but it had this really bad habit of throwing really wild flyers about one in 5, never could figure it out, 760 had no such problems in the same gun. Larry

Over 260 fps increase for 3/10 of a grain? Does that sound a bit too much?
I would check the chrony. (I check my chrony with .22 Rim Fire Subsonic ammo.) Then fire some more of the same load to be sure. Ken.

I have found when reloading with W760 that changing primers can make big changes in velocity, more so than any rifle powder I have experimented with. I also found W760 to be a relatively dirty burning powder; because of these two reasons I no longer use W760 or H414.

kenbro makes a great observation regarding the chrony. If you are mounting the crony on a tripod make sure that the base is not keeping the chrony from fully opening. What happens is that when not fully extended you move the windows slightly closer which gives a false reading. I know because it has happened to me. You shouldn't be getting these velocities and not experiencing over pressure signs.

My Quickload program is telling me that you are in the danger zone with 26.0 grains of W760 using the 30 bullet. This is a compressed load(106.5%)
Based on the QL program.... 25.6 grains of WW760 is Max with a velocity of 4000 fps with a 30 grain bullet in your 24" barrel. Only 95.7% of the powder is burned, so you will see a fire plume in low light. |

25.6 gr is not compressed for sure, the loading books all list 27 as max and it fills my cases to the top of the shoulder but is still not compressed. I burned a lot of 760 with 30gr bullets in the 17 Remington, best accuracy was at 25.6gr, and I did not have any problems at 27, they just didn't shoot well. Larry
