Default Bullet Length

My vintage .17-222 has 1:10 twist with a long throat. Beside the 20gr Vmax, I am trying to find an alternate bullet that will work without a huge jump. I did some quick measurements on the popular bullets that I had on hand. Just to confirm, the 15.5gr NTX bullet is 25% less weight and still as long as longest 20gr bullet (Vmax)???

0.490" 20gr Varmageddon (out to 0.498")
0.495" 20gr Varmint Nightmare (out to 0.500")
***note: length of both Varmaggedon and Varmint Nightmare varied from bullet to bullet due to irregular/inconsistent lips on hollow point opening

0.594" 20gr Vmax
0.677" 25gr Vmax

I ordered 500 myself in hopes of loading them for my 17 fireball. I emailed hornady for some starting loads and was informed the fireball is to much for the ntx.

Really. Then my 17 Fire ball does not know it. 16.3 grains of CFE BLK under one and it is both accurate and knocks the stuffings out of rock chucks and squeeks. Bill K

I have not ran through my chrono yet. Going to load some with my AA2200 load and these with the CFE BLK and will run them one day next week, as I want to see how they do compare.
However I can tell you this, when I shot those two chucks yesterday with the 15.5 and the CFE BLK load, I dialed that same as it do with the 20 grain bullet (since I have no drop chart for the 15.5's) and it hit right on the money. Those chucks were at around a 225-250 yrd mark. That 20 grain load runs 4029 fps and that is what that drop chart was worked up for.
So they must be running pretty close to the same area. Bill K

I just pulled QL using Berger's 15gr bullet, QL doesn't list the 15.5gr Hornady, for the 17 Fireball and, WOW, those little buggers are capable of some seriously fast velocities.

4400+ on ground squirrels should produce some awesome aerial affects, or as Rick in Oregon calls it, "Ratobatics".

yup. I update my bullet files quite frequently. flat base bullets are cake, just length and advertised BC usually is all that is needed. boat tail requires that measurement.

Brian Litz's website usually has length and bc's and most manufactures use the same boat tail lengths per caliber, not always but if you have the bullet in hand then it's a no brainer.

Bill 16.3gr must be pretty conservative of a load. I have a 1.125" cased wildcat that I squeeze 16gr under a .224 53gr varmagedon.

Might be, but it is the 17 Fire ball, not my 221FB and it is so accurate and more than enough speed, for me. Does a number on critters. Bill K
