The reamer that is used will determine whether or not you have to neck turn or not. I always specify to the gunsmith doing my build the brass that I'll be using so they can order/use the appropriate reamer with enough neck clearance.

I recently had a 20-222 and a 20-250 built, with both, I made sure my gunsmith used a reamer with enough neck clearance so I wouldn't have to turn necks.

I'm sure there are reamers out there for the 20VT that don't require neck turning. I'd have to look at the reamer print for my 20-222, but if I recall, you want a reamer with at least a .234 neck diameter, or larger, if you're using Lapua brass. I've seen a lot of 20VT reamers for sale with .233 neck diameters, some with tighter necks than that even. If you plan on using Lapua brass, that doesn't leave much neck clearance and you'll likely have to neck turn.

Default 20 vt

Both of my 20 vt used a .234 neck reamer. I use Rem 221 brass necked down and don’t have to neck trim

I think what moorepower was alluding to, is Lapua brass generally has a thicker neck wall than other makes of brass, which it does, so if your gun was chambered using a reamer with a tighter neck diameter and you use necked down Lapua brass, you may have to turn the necks.

Lapua necks are generally around 13.5-14 thou thick so you double that, then add it to .204 it gives you a loaded OD of .231-.232 and with a .234 neck diameter, that's only a thou per side which is about the bare minimum.

I will have to check with Northland, as the barrel will be a Shilen pre chambered. Possibly they have multiple chamber specs offered. i could always neck turn if needed. I have had fantastic luck with all of their pre fit barrels.

To me, neck turning is about as much fun as having my toenails pulled out with a rusty pair of pliers so I prefer to avoid it if possible.

If they have a reamer with a .235 or .236 neck diameter that would be the one I'd request they use if you plan to use Lapua brass and would like to avoid neck turning.

Default Neck turning

Agree on the toe nail and rusty pliers. I won’t do it.

i luv my 20vt!!!!!! i got rid of all my other varmint rifles. the tc encore with a 23" MGM barrel can do a .1 -.2" at 100 yards(5 shots/benched) with accurate handloads. i mean, neck trimming, weighed cases......and all the rest of the sh...........i mean poop!!!! i did it, i'll admit. i got over the one-hole wonder and don't reload them like that anymore. now its .3 - .5" at 100 yards and the groundhogs, foxes and 'yotes still live in fear of the 20vt.

i gave up counting of the loads i put thru her, but i'm guessing 3500-4000 rounds and rifling is just as crisp as MGM made her. i use a 34gr midway or midsouth hp over 18.4gr of rel7. i haven't chronyed it, but i'm guess 3700fps+/-.
