Any thoughts on 221 FB freebore with 40-55 grain projectiles?

When using 55gr. bullets, being able to seat them out a big, would help with case capacity - if interested in that aspect, otherwise, no. Being able to seat all bullets to touch the throat, is usually good for accuracy.
A longer leade for 55gr. but shooting 40gr. will not allow them to touch.

I would not go longer than .030". I think that would work well. You have to consider the length of the throat angle as well, especially if 1 1/2 degrees. 2 to 3 degrees might be better if using .030" to .040" leade.
It is all up to you and part of the experimentation of it all. I am sure they will all shot well.

If you go with a non-SAAMI freebore make sure the smith marks the barrel in case it gets sold or passed on. Same if you have them made as a tight neck. Not something that commonly gets talked about but it can be a real problem for guys buying the gun and trying to shoot factory ammo out of a non factory or min spec chamber.
