17 Ackley 25 or 30 degrees
Hey guys long time since I've posted, need some wisdom I'm making a couple of 17 ackley hornets for Contender pistols. My question is I notice there are two Ackley versions 25* and 30* which one would be better or more correct. Thanks in advance
OK now I just found a reamer thats 33*55 minutes. HELP!!! Last edited by sgtg; 09-30-2020 at 09:06 PM. |

Ackley is famous for the 40 degree shoulder so to me, the closer to that you are the closer to a real Ackley. All the 17 Ackley I have seen are a 30 degree shoulder With how easy it is to get brass etc for the 17 HH, which has a 25 degree shoulder, I really don't see any advantage to the Ackley version any more, and the HH has as good or better performance and the 17 HH will be far easier to resell. I would just order the 17 HH reamer and be done with it.

The .17 Ack.Hornet has a 30 degree shoulder.
As far as I know, all others are 40 degrees, except maybe the .17 PeeWee on the Carbine case. That one might also be 30 degrees. The .22 Kilborn Hornet had a 35 degree shoulder. The .22 Ackley Hornet I chambered up on a Martini, has the 30 degree shoulder as I used my .17AH reamer - LOL. There are no absolutes in the wildcat game - just - trends. I agree, the .17 Hornady Hornet would be the best approach, I think, for new guns, for the reasons Dean2 gave.

Dean2; I found a print for the real 17 Ackley Hornet with 33*55 minutes shoulder compared to 17 HH not really much difference. Thanks Great day to you and all the Saubier guys.

The HH is slightly shorter and has a larger diameter at the body shoulder junction, thius they both have nearly the same capacity. For your use not a big deal, but for guns that feed from the mag it means you can use the 20 or 25 Vmax, still fit the loaded round into a standard 22 H mag and have a true repeater if you want.

I would go 30° if nothing else to keep case growth down.

You might also want to check with the mfg of the dies you're using. I think the 30* is the correct. Ackley also made the 218 Ack Imp with a 30* shoulder.

On a practical side, unless you just have to have something that the others kids on your block don't have, I'd stick with the basics.
No matter what you do to the 17 Hornet case, its not going to magically become a screamer in terms of velocity. But to each their own. I know I've resorted to some screwy thing in my life, so I'm not preaching. Jut trying to be a bit more practical in my later years. -BCB
