hornady 15.5 ntx 4181 fps and tree squirrels (lil long)
first off i did not shoot them out of trees but on the ground under walnut trees.
the results were surprising though and not at all what i expected. rifle is a cz 527 in 17 v-raptor (aka 17 vha). load was 10.5 300 mp powder 15.5 ntx chrono graphed at 4181 fps. the results were three squirrels with minimal damage to them. about like what you would expect from a 17 mach 2. it's only a theory but i think the bullet went thru the squirrel so fast it didn't have enough resistance to expand in an explosive manner, shot a 4th one with 10.4 gr aa1680 and a 20 gr vmax and just about de-capitated it. gave the squirrels to a friend to skin for another friend just placed in hospice, he is 94 and 9 months old and loves his squirrel. i get a call from my friend and told me to make sure the next time i shoot squirrels to make sure they are dead. he left them on the back porch for about 2 minutes to get his knife for skinning them. when he came back out they were all gone. we suspect the neighbors dog got them. well it's back to the woods tomorrow for refills and to make sure they are dead this time.
