Is that better?
Lowell tried to say what you said but it didn't come out that way... But I think everyone understood what he was saying in spite of the "new math" his words were creating...

Lightbulb OK fellas...

First, use a brush. The brush will not skip across the rifling, where a patch might slip around a smooth jag.

Next, as a few have said, PULL the brush.....it will stay tight on the rod.

Next, and not my idea, forget about the tape and sharpie mark. Just clip a wooden clothesline pin(if you can find one.....no, you can't have mine) to the rod shaft. This will easily show an accurate full rotation of the pulled cleaning rod.

Finally, measure the distance between the rod guide and clothesline pin, at the start and finish of one rod revolution.

Over the years, I've found that I can easily measure twist to within a tenth of an inch.

I oughta take a pic of this.....some day.

Hope this helps.

Default I like the clothes pin idea.

To put it in red neck terms.........see this way I understand it.

It is the distance the cleaning rod travels to make one revolution.

Clothes pin idea would let you see the revolution take place.

Default I use tape....

However use black electrician's tape [we ALL have a roll of that hanging on the wall by a nail, right?]. I wrap one turn of tape around the rod tightly and back near the handle of the cleaning rod. I extend the two ends of the tape OUT about an inch to where the two ends stick together forming a leaf extension of sorts. This tape 'leaf' sticking out much like the cloths pin gives a good visual of when the rod has made an exact full turn. I push the rod but do not rely on the bearings in the handle to allow the rod to turn with the rifling. Even when I clean a bore I grab the rod with my bare hand and and 'feel' the rod so as to know it is FOLLOWING the rilfing. It works pretty good. The tape 'leaf' will bend in storage but I just straighten it out when the rod is in position and ready to do the job.
I use the back end of the cleaning tip where the brass meets the stainless rod [Pro Shot] to use as a start measuring guide. I line it up with anything on the action when the patch seems to have engaged the rifleing. When the tape leaf at the handle has turned ONE turn, I put a mark or piece of tape on that point of the rod that lines up with the base point, and then measure between it and the back end of the brass.
.
WOW. I thought I was going to clear this up for everyone and now I'm wondering why I'm STILL TYPING my 'easy method'.....HA~!
Let's just say..."I can do it".

I'd never thought about that before but those jags and brushes sure do come loose once in a while...

Guess your never to old to learn,, although I'm getting pretty close...

LOL..!! Progress..!!

I bet if you used a good quality set of Vice Grips firmly latched onto the rod to avoid any slippage that you could get those measurements down to within 0.01", or maybe even better...

Just guessing.... -BCB

Never send a reply without reading it again, thanks for pointing out my mistake and thanks to those who came to my defense. Someday I may learn that how ever sure I am of what I have written, by the time it gets to the blog or through e-mail it has somehow changed.

Default He he!

still giggling. I knew exactly what Lowell meant, from trying to get my education in rifles, and barrels. Lots of reading. Still have a LOOONNNNGGGG ways to go.

I use scotch tape. I put it exactly at the end of the muzzle, when the tape points up, I tape it again, at the end of the muzzle, and measure. the tape tears off easily.
