Remington match primer & federal match primers?
I have been using the Remington for yrs in my 204. I seen some federal match primers yesterday. I picked up few boxes to try. Isnt the federal a little hotter primer? I am working up a few new loads. I was going to try them . But I have 7 or 8 thousand Remington on hand. Using the loads for coyote hunting. Thanks

I think the test was on the accurate shooter sight. I honestly can't remember.

As I recall the Federal Match were selected to be more consistent, but were similar for brisance . The Rem 7.5 and CCI450 are thicker cups, so they are more tolerant of hotter loads or have a less tendency to pierce primers. There was a good article in either Rifle or Handloader about 10 years ago with pictures of primers being set off.
James Calhoon's website has a decent table of primers comparing cup thickness. |

THIS SHOULD GET YOU TO THE PRIMER INFO FROM JAMES CALHOON'S SITE.
Click on the link below. Once you get the site page go to the left hand column and select "Informative Articles". When the article page comes up scroll down to "Primers and Pressures" and see if this doesn't give you the info you are looking for. Hope this helps. Regards, Charlie http://www.jamescalhoon.com/

I've always had to back off a load if using Remington primers, regardless of size or type. Depending on the powder, I only use CCI and Federal primers.

I'm moving to Federal 205M AR primers, all the good things of the 205 Match with a thicker cup.

Another good primer for your use, is the CCI #41. made for use in AR's and has a heavy cup also. They are like the 205M, 7.5 Remington and a couple others, that work best with high intensity cartridges, and will stop the piercing, unless you go overboard on max pressure loads there also. Bill K

Thanks I bought up the Remington 7 1/2. When primers was hard too get. I was reading on 204 ruger forum. Several guys was using Remington too. So I went with them. I always used a 22 250 or 22 250AI. 204 was my first small caliber rifle. That 204 has become my favorite gun to carry calling. I use federal match primers in my 280 and 280AI.

If you can find some, the CCI BR4 is another good primer for Small Rifle primer cartridges.
For years now, the only primers I use in small cartridge cases are the thicker cupped primers like are shown at the Calhoon link provided above. When availability is not a problem, I have received good accuracy from the CCI BR4 and the Rem 7.5 primers, and those two options are my usual choices. -BCB

I don't remember if it was mentioned or not, but the Remington 7 1/2 primer is a "Magnum/Match" primer, and is an excellent primer for use in a LOT of different cartridges! I use it in all of my 357 Maximum rifles, as well as my 222 Remington and my 6mm American, just to name a few.
