I formed about 20 from LC 223 brass...what a PITA...I annealed it twice in forming, and by the time I turned the necks down to where they needed to be, i figured it was much easier, and less expensive to just buy the brass. I love forming brass, but that transformation was enough to make me pull my short hairs out!
17 rem from 204 was a lot easier, and even 20VT from 222 rem, or 223 brass was a lot easier...I gave up on the 17's. I just don't have the knack, or experience, and maybe even the patience for 17FB from 223. That said, I do like forming brass, just not 17FB from 223. Larry

I spent a lot of hours forming about 250 17fBs from military brass last winter.
I have'nt shot any, as I want to anneal first. Larry's right ! PITA ! I just hope it's worth it when It's time to shoot them ! I'll be picking everyone of them up as we're well acquainted ! Jim |

When I started shooting the mach1V there was no internet, it was darn hard to find other 17 cal shooters, and no 17 Fireball.
I started with a set of Skip Otto button dies to transform 221 brass into 17 Mach1V cases, it was slick and fast. Then for some reason I decided I wanted to make the cases from 223 or 222 cases. I talked to Skip and he told me he would send me what I need to get the job done. I made the 17 Mach1V brass from a lot of 223 LC casrs but it is labor intensive and I no longer feel like doing it. It just plain eats up a lot of time, trimming and neck turning when needed are the big pains. Glad I have those button dies just in case brass gets a little spotty obtaining. |

To take a rocky road is to learn the hard way ! Or someting like that.
If for nothing else, it will give you an appreciation for factory brass, and will teach you what to look for when reloading or forming brass. I'm still putting off annealing til later this Winter. Jim |

I have never made 17 fireball, but have made a lot of .221 fireball from .223 (and even made a few from .204 ruger just because I had them)
To do this, I started with a redding .221 fb trim die. Lube the case with imperial and run them in. I had to trim down a shell holder to get the shoulders to get the shoulder back far enough. i did this with a coarse sharpening stone. Redding sells these already made but I was on a budget, and had an extra one around. Once you run the case into the trim die, there is a nub of case sticking out the top. I used a coping/trim saw to cut this off. it works great. I just leave the tops rough and trim them all later with a case trimmer. After trimming, I would anneal them. I don't know if this was necessary, but I did it in the interest of case life. I would think this would be necessary to go down to .17 My 221 had a fairly large chamber, so I didn't have to neck turn or ream. These brass actually shot better than the Rem .221 fireball brass that I had. I was really pretty easy, and didn't take too long. My loss rate was also very low, once I got it figured out, I think I only lost 2 or 3 out of the few hundred I made. |

All I have ever used
was my redding bushing die, just remove the bushing run the case through and then install the bushing and run through and trim to length. this always worked for me with new brass Nelson
