Default milling a CZ action

I think I put the cart before the horse. I had the idea to make my CZ 527 221 Fireball into a switch barrel rig. I had a 17/204R barrel fitted to the action and traded for the appropriate sized bottom metal and magazine.

What I did not realize though, is that the recess on the bottom of the Fireball actions is smaller (by about .110") than the standard 223 sized CZ action. The 204R bottom metal and magazine won't fit.

Has anybody opened up a Fireball action to work with 223/204 sized cases? Seems like it would be easy for a mill to do.

I would just try to trade the Fireball action for a standard sized CZ, but I've already had the 17-204R barrel chambered and fitted. I'm guessing the barrel wouldn't headspace correctly on another action?

Any advise??

It'll be used for coyotes, so I need a repeater.

Chad, this is the punishment imposed when you try to make one gun do the job when you could have bought two. This is why we NEED more rifles!

Default Why change it from a 221 F/B??

Why not keep it a 221 F/B? That little round will kill them as dead as you need. After I purchased my initial CZ 527 American in 221 F/B back when they first came out I used it as my main coyote rifle in southern AZ (mostly west of Tucson) with outstanding results. The first coyote load I used in the 221 was a 42 gr Calhoon Double Hollow Point over AA1680. Killed 2 my first hunt with the CZ. The first one I killed was hit broadside at 80 yds in the heart/lung area. It was an large adult female. When I went to recover the carcass I was surprised at the results. Near side, no entry hole as expected. When I rolled the coyote over to check out the far side I was astounded to find an exit hole that I could easily put my fist into If I had told you that the animal had been killed with a 7MM Rem Mag you would have believed me it was that dramatic. The next coyote was shot through the right eye with a fairly normal exit hole in the left temple. After that hunt I went back home and changed my hunting load bullets back to Hornady 50 gr SXSPs that I had been using for years in my previous coyote rig (an old Rem 660 in 223). Never lost an animal after I started using the 221 F/B, and never had another mess like with the 46 gr Calhoons once I changed my bullets. Keep us posted on your decisions/progress with whatever you decide.

Great excuse to by another rifle !!!

I'd make that 221 into a 20Vartag. and get another 527 in 223, then start my switch barrel project!

Sorry Chad !
I was just going to ask what rifle you set up for the 20 Practical ! I thought it might have been that Savage.

The 221 action is a little rare these days, with everyone wanting a 20 Vartag and the 17 Fireball!

It would eliminate the extra bottom metal switchin to.

Jim

Rainin cats and dogs here, can you tell? Ha!
