Default Unertl Scope

Hello fellas I’m new here and looking for your help identifying a wooden box I recently purchased. I believe it’s a scope case but would like to be sure. It has a date inside it May 15,1945 and H.A. Dexter JR FALL RIVER MASS. There are also two sets of Unertl scope mounts mounted in the bottom of the box. Appears that it could carry two scopes. Any help or information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

Trying to add some pictures but haven’t figured it out yet still trying.

Default Unertl

Hello and welcome to the board,

I unfortunately can't offer any information as to what you might have there but it does sound interesting for sure. I would be interested in seeing pictures of what you might have.
I'm sure someone who has a better understanding of posting pics than myself will be along and hopefully help you get your pictures posted.

Stan

Back inn the day, John Unertl's company was on East St. in Pittsburgh, PA. I have one 1-3/4 inch Unertl target scope that came with a metal case with gray hammer tone paint finish and a set of factory instructions.

I have a 20 power Programmer that came with a wooden box with slides on the top to open. not the original owner, but I believe it is the correct box.

Couch Hound, by dumb luck, I googled H.A. Dexter and found the following in a city directory of Falls River, MA.:

(Dexter), a Henry A. bookkeeper, 29 Jesse, boards 26 Barnaby

the full citation is: https://archive.org/stream/fallriver...7bost_djvu.txt

I believe he was 29 at the time, and he boards (rents not owns a home). The citation is old, maybe before 1900.

I am no genealogy whiz, but I bet he was a shooter who had the scopes, but the citation here says was a book keeper.

Hope this helps.

The picture helps a lot. With the barrel blocks screwed into the bottom of the box, I would bet that was a homebuilt box, especially with the nice walnut or mahogany wood. My metal box comes with supports that have a v-shaped saddle to support the tube of the scope, and the supports are high enough so the rings don't touch the box when supported.
