17 HMR Problem?
Hi All,
I bought some 17 HMR about 10 years ago and when I went to use them I discovered that about half of them have a tiny crack or split on the neck. Is this normal? Is it safe to shoot these? can they damage my chamber? Should I send them in for exchange? Thanks, Marcos (elalto) |

The HM2s have/had the same problem with ammo that has been stored long term. Not sure about the accuracy but they should be ok in a bolt action.

Had the exact same thing happen. I will say this, when I used them in a brand new Ruger single six the very first round lodged a bullet between the barrel and the cylinder. The powder went bad and only the primer went off.
In my case it was Hornady ammo. |

Take note of the box numbers and contact the maker.

This ^ ! They are not safe to shoot. As said, bullets have lodged in barrels and when a subsequent bullet is fired unknowingly (as in semiautos) barrels have exploded and injuries have occurred. I seem to recall this being a problem with certain manufactured bullets, but cant recall which ones.

I am guessing they won't replace 10 year old ammo. I think it would be best to pull the bullets and use them in a .17 Hornet.
