coyote rug w/17HMR
This week I picked-up my sons coyote rug from the taxidermist after waiting 2years for it to get done.
He'd shot this avergae sized male coyote at just under 100 yards with one shot from a single shot 17HMR It was his first in-life, coyote kill. At a cost of $550. CDN for the job I won't be getting to many taxidermied. |

black coyote rug ...
I had this black coyote tanned 5 years ago at a cost of $400.CDN at same taxidermist.
It's a female coyote shot with a 22-250 Ackley at 300yards while running with other coyotes in an open field near a cattle feedlot. I've never seen another black coyote even though I've hunted that area hard for last 15 years. |

Never seen a black one before, gotta be mighty rare.
Too bad you killed the only female huh? Might have been many more by now. Bet that was a mixed breed somehow. Fine looking pelts and rugs. Hope the tanning was perfect so they'll last forever. Too many do their own tanning that rots out in a few yrs. After seeing that happen to so many fine mounts I'd never let a taxidermist tan a hide. They'd go to the commercial tanners then back to him for mounting. Yeah, I know that's gonna ruffle lots of feathers. Save it, been down that argument many times and it ain't gonna do any good to call me on it. Moose, elk and buck from Jonas Bro/Seattle & Denver. IF they can't do a tan right, it just about can't be done I'd think. So what chance would a local have? Wish you the best, George

Very Nice! I have wanted a black coyote for a rug for a long time. I have two friends who are trappers in my area that have caught a black coyote in past years. It is actually a color phase in coyotes, similar to cinnamon and blond color phase in black bears. 100% coyote would be my bet. They are not unheard of in my area but not common either.
