I had gotten some 35gr Vmax for my Hornet, but the performance in the wind was terrible. The 40gr Vmax or NBT work so much better, so I never used them in anything bigger.

Like Dean2 said, the 35gr. Hornady Vmax is not good past about 150yards. My own hornet put them into 2 1/2" at 200 meters, but they were consistently 3/8" or tighter at 100 meters.
The 40gr. Vmax & 40gr. Ballistic Tips were super, right out to 400meters.

My Rifle is and was a Sako L461, 14" twist.

Didn't have a chrono those days so no idea
the velocity.
Daryl: do you load that powder? OR anyone else
with comparable rifle and loads I'd like to know
what it was pushing.

Strange thing though. Noslers orange tip 40 gr
wouldn't make a group under 1 1/2".

This was sorting thru 19 various bullets another member here
and I came up with to test in the new barrel.

C/L's 55gr was just over half inch, that's always been my main
p/dog bullet. So I ordered another 5000 of 'em and 2000 40gr V'max.

We had Bergers and just about every other brand, all 35-55gr. same load
for all of them. Just changed bullets. To start with: 5 of each.
IF they did well, I loaded ten of each of those and discarded the rest.
When the 55gr C/L's and 35 & 40gr v'max proved so great a shooters.
I loaded about 50 of each and we went to shooting.

I've never learned what the term means: All Steve would ever say was
"that shoots like a house afire". I still don't know what that means and Charlie used the term a few days ago.

Tell me------:

I am with you there. The 40 Vmax is where it's at with my Hornets. An easy 2900 fps with lilGun.

Same here, around 2900fps, but with W296 and 40gr Vmax.

The Hornady 35gr Vmax factory ammo was 3250fps through my chronograph.

As previously mentioned, the VNE/Dogtown/Nosler 34g 22 cal.

At high velocities its got about a 300yd PBR for an 8" target, blows 'em up good, reasonably accurate, cheap. Add AA2200 and you got 4000+ fps out of a std 223 with little stress. Large meplat, no BC, loses velocity fast but its a laser flat trajectory to 250 yds, not a long range bullet.

George, my rifles for those bullets were Hornets and the .218Bee #1.
My .222 Sako particularly likes the VLC Barnes 40gr. with 2230 powder, at
3,540fps (or maybe 3,640fps, I don't remember which).

I may have to try these in my 14 twist 22 Nosler upper.
I get great results with 40 gr bullets but haven't been thrilled with any of the 35 gr I've tried.
