Totally agree but he did not specify. I would add unless it is rimmed I would not.

A TRUE AI'd chamber needs a set back if you are AI'ing the existing cartridge BUT you can cut a 223 AI chamber in a 222 Rem barrel with out setting it back.
You can IMPROVE any cartridge without setting the barrel back, wildcats like Gibbs cartridges actually move the shoulder forward so no set back is necessary. You can use a 223 AI reamer to improve an existing 223 with out setting it back and you have a 223 Improved 40 degree but not a 223 AI. You can even use 223/.378 competition shell holders that are thicker to adjust for the extra length in headspace. I hand ream 223 barrels to 22-204 and 6x47 Rem to 6mm-204 or otherwise know as the 222 Rem Mag Improved and 6x47mm Improved that don't need for custom dies, fireforming or setting back the barrel. |

The "A" came in, in being able to fire factory ammo. I don't do that, thus not necessary. My .375 Ackley IMP is not really an Ackley IMP ctg. - as there is no factory .375 ctg. on the '06 case. This does not matter at all, to me.

The main reason I was asking is to find out if a hand reamer would cut a clean, straight chamber. I presume it will and I presume I can use a fired case as a go-no-go gage.

I used 'ready' to load (sized) brass as my headspace gauge. When the bolt closed on a case, I was done. There was no double shoulder on fired brass. Worked out perfectly, even time.

I leave the barrel on the action and have a bushing on the reamer handle to center it in the action to keep it straight.

Where does a guy get a reamer handle and bushing?

Try Brownell's or PT&G Jordan.

Thanks Bill. Too obvious for me to figure out!
