20 Vartarg freebore
I’m conflicted on what freebore to spec for my reamer. I’ve spent hours trying to figure this one out.
I plan to shoot bullets in the 32-40 grain. Probably 32 vmax and/or 40 vmax. I know if I was only 100% going to shoot 32 grain, Zero Freebore would be the way to go. However if I shoot 40 vmax, the zero freebore is going to seat a little deep even if loaded to touch the lands. Likewise I know if I was going to shoot only the 40 vmax, 0.050 freebore would be the way to go. So, has anyone found a happy medium (is it practical to be able to shoot both bullets with the same freebore)? I was thinking something in the range of 0.015 to 0.035 would still give enough neck length for the 32’s but also not have the 40’s seat to deep. Best, Shaun |

I think you're over thinking it. Zero will be just fine.

My thoughts as well. A nice 1 1/2 to 2 degree (at most) throat and call it done.
It's nice to be able to touch the throat with all bullets you will use.

Aaron's right, go with the Zero. More than likely you won't get what you ask for anyway, particularly if you buy a Kiff reamer. Unless you have an optical comparator or like tool, you won't be able to measure it anyway.

I spec all my small cartridge reamers as zero freebore anymore. As was said, you probably won't get zero anyway. Later, if you decide you want to shoot strictly 40's and you don't like how deep they seat, there is always the Uni-throater to lengthen freebore to suit.

It will be a JGS. Their length tolerance is supposed to be within 0.005”

Very good choice. JGS is top notch and great to work with you won't be disappointed.

My .17AH Reamer came from Pacific Tool and Gauge with what appears to be zero freebore or Leade, as-ordered.
25gr. Vmax and Hornady HP's sat with bases even with the neck/shoulder junction and 20gr. Vmax were up from that - all easily touching the lands, nice square land mark on blackened bullets for .010" 'into the lands' loading my bl. likes.
