With respect to the comments on temp stability. I have velocity tested the Lil'Gun loads at 30, 50 and 90 F. In the 17 HH, 22 H and 221 FB there was no out of the ordinary changes in velocity, SD or ES. No idea what 120 does as it doesn't get that hot here.

I think that there must be some real lot to lot swings.

Early on when Lil'Gun first came out, I got huge swings in velocities and SD, so much so that I won't use it in bottle neck cartridges any more. I still use LG in 45 Colt and sometimes in 357 Magnum. For the 221FB, I stick with RL7 and AA2200.

14.5gr with 40gr vmax has always shot great in any of my fireballs. Velocity was around 3400 if I remember right.

If there is I have never seen it. I have shot at least 100 pounds of Lil'Gun over the years and it was bought in 8Lb jugs over those years, so I would think it would have shown up somewhere in there. Like I have said before, the only issue with this powder is loading it below the book minimums. That will create wonky pressures and results. At min load and above I have never had pressure spikes for any reason, heat, cartridge etc. I have had to use SP primers in the 22 H and 218 Bee to get SD and ES down where I wanted it, but that was true with other powders in those cartridges too. I am NOT saying others haven't seen pressure variations, but there has to be something different about what they were doing.

I agree with TinMan and moorepower concerning variable burning rates. My first shot out of a clean barrel about 10 days ago with 15.5 gr. and 40 gr. V-Max in a 24" Douglas barrel was 3469 fps. There was a slight click at the top of the bolt lift, primer a little flat, but not completely, seen far worse. The next round was 3484, blew the primer, could not open the bolt, case head had expanded inside the recessed bolt face (old Shilen action). 205M primers, temp. 72 degrees, was early in the morning. New R-P brass, powder weighed on digital scale I use for all my loads. Did not jam the bullet in the lands. Not sure I'm going to try that powder again in the .221. I haven't had a blown primer in ages. I guess I could back up to about 14 gr and work up, but the abrupt result between the 1st and 2nd shot have me worried. RL-7, N120 and H4198 will get me about 3300 without any drama, and are pretty predictable.
