I found BT's, Vmax's and Barnes Varminator HP's to be all about equal on Columbia ground squirrels - high splat factor on all.

Coyotes at 100 to 150yards with 45gr. Hornady SP's at 3,100fps worked a treat, no exit and DRT.

Bullets are getting real pricey and even harder to find currently. I have always thrown away high BCs for more flying ability and gore so I have always enjoyed bullets with big hollow points and the Winchester 46gr in the 221 is one of my favorite for laugh factor. I wonder if substitution of the Hornady 45 gr would work?

However I have been trying to find stock for many different bullets the last few days and its almost impossible to buy a decent size quantity of anything I like for spring varminting. I have never used the Sierra 40 gr HP. Does anyone have experience with it?

The Sierra 40gr HP is a much tougher bullet, with a thicker jacket. It is meant for 22-250 and Swift type higher speeds. Read the descriptions in the Sierra webpages.

Also, Sierra and Hornady make 40gr and 45gr Hornet-specific bullets with thin jackets.

I have read the description and the reason is was designed with the thicker jacket. I cannot find more than a few boxes of stuff at each retailer however a few retailers have lots of the 40 gr in stock but I don't think I will be happy with them.

I’ve shot Thousands of 32gr DHP’s in .19 Badger. Great splat, I like them better than the tipped .19 32gr. , others prefer the tipped.

I’ve also shot thousands of 40gr. V Max’s from a CZ .221 FB with a 12 twist.

I would consider the splat about the same between the two. Like others have said, a lot depends on where you hit them.

Bigger critters and deer, I use Calhoon (non tipped) bullets. They have performed very well for me. tipped varmint bullets in this application performed poorly.

Shot my first group with the Calhoon bullets a couple days ago and they shot a nice group. I can see that they will be in my prairie dog's nightmares next summer.

Seems to me, the box of 40gr. Sierra HP's I had, had a warning of "Minimum 3,600fps" on it, or maybe that was the listing in their loading manual.
They were very accurate, though.

Yes, and if you hit real hard soil at glancing angles, you can occasionally hear a ricochet from them. Just make sure of your target and stuff behind.

I have shot some of them before but couldn't remember how well they blew up compared to V-Max particularly. Just got some of Calhoon's 42 Dbl HP to try and was wondering what to expect as far as terminal performance. Seems like I have read that they were pretty explosive.
Before plastic tip bullets came into the marketplace, I liked the 45 gr. Hornady Hornet bullet for the 221 FB.

NBT's are stoughter built then vmax or blitzing.
Nbts are a decent fur/coyote bullet.
