I have 2 Remington 700's, one a 22" Pac-Nor and the other 15" McGowen barrel specialty pistol. The 15" barrel keeps up fine to about 400 yards, then the 22" barrel is a little better. For me shooting sage rats and prairie dogs the 15" is just fine. I only shoot to around 400 (+-) yards so the 15" has been getting more use. I'm in the process now of converting the 22" to a 16" McGowen in a 7 twist.

I purchased a 22BR with a 26.5" bbl with the intent of shortening it. I first did a little load work on it to see if it would be worth the extra cost of shortening the bbl. The 14 twist bbl shot into the ones with Berger 52's with varget. After much thought I finally lopped off the bbl to 22" this past winter. The bbl is a Shilen #8 contour.
I have not shot the original load yet to see the difference but I expect there to be difference, good or bad. This thread has just motivated me to go shoot it. Results to come. |
