Default Muzzle Brake and Impact difference

Wow !
I picked up a cheap muzzle brake, for my new Howa Mini, in 223. Pencil thin barrel, came threaded. So why not try ?

Sighted in and everything looked good at a hundred yards. My son complained about the loudness, as he was set up on the table next to me.

So I pulled the brake off, and fired a round down at the target. It printed the target at about 7" high. Wow !

Anyone else have that kind of variation?

Jim

That seems extreme, assuming the rifle groups better than 7" How close is the thru hole to the caliber and is the hole centered on the bore?

I usually see less than 1 moa change with a brake installed.

Similar experience.

I purchased a Wby Mk 5 synthetic ultralight from a friend and found issues with the stock's bedding. Drove it to Wby and they said they would look it over. Got a call 3 days later that it has a new stock, they sent me images of 2 different 3 shot groups hovering around 5/8". I inquired when I dropped it off, and stated if it shoots well I might want them to put a brake on it, and with it shooting like that I said to do it. Got it shooting a little better with Barnes ammo, but after complaints from one BIL it would hurt his ears I decided to remove the brake, since Wby stated no changes to group size or impact point. Shot at a really nice Muley and when I got back to camp set up a 100 yd target and couldn't find a hole. Ihad a wild thought, I Remembered I put the brake in the gun's travel bag and threaded it on. Poof, back to shooting where and how it had before. Killed a better buck 2 days later.

My son now uses that gun, with brake. I just keep my distance when we are stalking deer, lol.

The rifle grouped very well around an inch, a little under, with the brake.
As soon as I put the brake back on, the group returned, to the original grouping.

My theory was, the extra weight of the brake caused the thin barrel to whip.

The brake was sold as made for a .223 barrel 1/2" / 28, weighing 4 oz.

Planning to keep the brake on for now.

I haven't seen 7MOA shift when hanging a suppressor on a barrel. But you proved it was possible. Does the brake have holes on the top?

I have several brakes for different rifles so I can tune the load to that brake, mine adjust the POI but not the accuracy for the most part, or not enough to matter to me. I use 'em for pdogs/rats, so I use 'em to reduce muzzle flip so I can watch the show.

I had a professional gunsmith install a brake on a Rem SPS 30-06 I shot a lot, first time out shot a 12" group they fixed it, Sure, shot a 8" group went to a SMITH proper back to 1.25 at one hundred, He said when they opened up the brake they did so off center making an elliptical hole ???? Why? they only had to stock one size brake then open it up to accommodate any bore necessary, Any oddity will cause a change in POI

Two small holes slightly larger than 1/8", on the top side of the brake.

They are angled backward.
I'll try and post the Ebay pic.

I may have to order one of those, at that price you know they did not hire the best robot to run the CNC, looks effective though, At this time in my life the noise and or heavy recoil suffering is now being answered by get a cartridge that does not need a brake, But I have several threaded barrels that need something attached LOL brakes do add that ooohhh look
