Default 20 VT bullet for coyotes

I have a 10 twist barrel in a Pac Nor 24" barrel and looking for a good penetrating bullet for coyotes. I'm not concerned about saving the hides.

From what I've read so far it seems that a 39 gr Sierra BK may be the goto bullet. Evidently it will break a should bone and penetrate a little deeper.

I know a .223 or .204 ruger would be better, but I want to use the VT.

Nothing against the SBK's, they always seem to shoot well, but for what you're describing I'd use the 35gr or 40gr Berger's over the 39gr SBK.

AP2020 has a couple vids of a variety of 204 bullets he shot in to ballistic gel. Nothing scientific but he does a pretty good job with what he has.

Default 20 vt coyote bullet

I use Berger 35 grain. I’ve not shot very many with it, but it’s worked well. I use the same bullet in the 20VT and 204 Ruger, on coyotes.

The consensus on the Alberta coyote hunting FaceBook forums seems to be that the Berger 35gr is the one for coyotes. Haven't tried it personally but some pretty experienced guys swear it is head and shoulders above the rest.

Since I must use lead free in Commie California for game shooting now, I use the Nosler 32 grain LF and have no issues killing yotes.
Chest or head shots. Entrance and it blows, no exit. DOA.

I'm on the waiting list now at several places for the 35 gr Bergers. Hope to try them soon.

I haven't tried the Nosler LF, but have used some of the other 32 gr bullets on PD and sage rats. So, the Nosler 32 gr LF doesn't produce a splash effect on the coyote?

I've got a bunch of 32 & 40 grain VMax I could use, I just thought I needed something with a little deeper penetration.

It has not done so, for me. But I shoot them in the chest/lung area, broadside or head on. Don't know if I hit the main shoulder bone how they would do.
I think, however, that they would do the job regardless.

I have a buddy that shoots a lot of coyotes - he's a rancher here in Alberta. His fur buyer has been impressed with the holes (or lack of) using 40 grain Berger in his 20 Extreme. Couple winters back between trapping and shooting he took over 75 yotes in prime
