Update:
Well the action has gone into the gunsmith. I ordered a set of 20-222 dies from CH4D which arrived 12days later. Ran twenty of the new Bertram 222Rimmed cases I had through the FLS die, all sweet, no issues at all. Just need to trim to max 222Rem length and then be good to go. have a set of timber for it, which I found whilst digging through the cupboard looking for something else the other day. Completely forgot I had it! Have three different brands of 32gn pills coming so I can assemble a few loads. Was looking at purchasing one of the new Bushnell Engage 6-18x50 scopes for it. It's all coming together. |

In my year over there I saw only a couple of truly Khyber Pass guns. I did see a lot of European guns that had been repaired with local parts or in the case of muzzle loaders locks assembled into some real interesting Afghan Fantasy pieces. Post the pictures and I try to ID for you. If you do have a European or Kabul arsenal action you have an action every bit as sound and a Britsh made MH. If you have a complete Kabul Arsenal gun or European gun, you may find its value as a collectible exceeds its worth as parts or even a rebuilt custom rifle.

The gunsmith has worked the barrel ready for fitting. It's worked to 24" chambered & will be in a similar profile to the Sako sporter barrels. It'll be a straight profile for about 3-4" forward from the action to allow for the fitting of a Lynx steel scope base.
The action needs a bit of work. I wasn't able to clean it up myself before it went in, so that has to be factored in. The block face has to be bushed & the firing pin modified to suit. The back of the action will also be drilled to allow for cleaning from the chamber end once the action is removed. The chamber will be cut to match the 222Rimmed brass with a 20cal neck, no change to the shoulder angle. Once it's done I'll load a fired case & measure the OD to get the measurement needed to order a Type S bushing & neck die. Some 20cal samples turned up today so I've loaded one case with a Hornady Z-Max for the gunsmith to use as a chamber test dummy. I also loaded two up with a charge of ADI AR2207 (similar specs to RL7) 19gns. These will be used as test fire rounds plus will give me two cases to confirm chamber dimensions. All metal will have a deep glossy blue-black bluing and the timber will be finished with a hand rubbed oil finish. Scope wise I'm still undecided, but thinking either 4-12 or 6-18x should do. 20 Duster
Pay attention to what 17 VLD is telling you. I shoot six (6) Martinis, 5 of which are custom builds using only the action. Two of them have Bob Snaps rimless extractor/ejector and they can be troublesome if you push the pressure of the cartridge. So, your selection of a rimmed cartridge is sound.
I am completing a Martini model 12 build in 20 Jet Improved, it runs right there with the 20 Vartarg. The reason I did not build a 20 Duster is because I have a 20 TAC built of a Remington 722 bolt gun and they are too close to each other with the 20 TAC a bit faster than the 20 Duster. Press on, you are right on target. John |
