Default 17 Squirrel powder choices

The only powder I have used in my 17 Squirrel has been Win 296. I settled on a load of 8.4 grains behind the Hornady 15.5 NTX. I only had a partial can starting out with the Squirrel but figured it would last me for awhile but I foolishly loaded up some 357 mag rounds. Now I'm in panic mode.

Those of you that are loading the 17 Squirrel. What has been your powder of choice?

Thanks, Mike

Don't have a 17 Squirrel, W296 and H110 are nominally the same powder, just the usual lot to lot slight variations.

I’m pretty sure that I tried enforcer but can’t remember the results. I’ll try to look it up later this week and see what else I tried.

Did a search here but found nothing except this article that I’m sure you have read... just a darn good reread

And then this

Thanks Tinman
Sad thing is that my local gun store had 10 jugs of H110 two weeks ago with a limit of 2 per customer I didn't think to get any. I picked up 2 jugs of CFE BLK instead. Oh the foolish things we do.

Also thanks GL for the links to the info

Obviously everyone says W-296 is the go to powder. And yes H110 is the same stuff. I ended up settling on VV-N110 for a very slow velocity game load. I recently started playing with the 20 Mink and I'm having GREAT results with enforcer. I plan to try out enforcer in the 17 Squirrel when I have some time. If you cannot find Enforcer on the shelf Accurate 4100 is the identical powder.....or so I've read. I will find out because I just bought 5 pounds of it off GunBroker. These small calibers are just way too much fun....if there is such a thing.

I have found 1680 a great powder for a variety on cases in the 8-10 grain range.

Thanks Tim.
I just picked up two pounds of AA1680 and two pounds of IMR 4227. I have been using 1680 in subsonic black out rounds.

I really like enforcer in my squirrel with either 20 or 15.5 grain bullets.. I get good velocity and accuracy with it and none of the pressure problems.

Ramshot Enforcer is by far my favorite powder in the 17 Squirrel at 7.4 gr and 3400 fps with 20 Gr Vmax. I use Remington hornet brass and federal gold medal pistol primers.

In the book "The Sensational Seventeens", Todd along with the powders mentioned above, lists loads using Accurate #7 and #9 with 20 gr. bullets.
Gives you a couple more possibilities.
