What 20 caliber cartridge is best for the l46
Hi to all, and thank you to all that responded to my previous post. I read all the responses carefully, and use the links provided. Pictures were great!!! Thanks Again!!!!
It seems that the sako L46 action is a good base for a light weight walk around 300yd rifle. My next question deals exclusively with the cartridge. I am leaning toward the 20-222 as dies, brass, loads, are all available. And the 222 brass will feed through the clip of the L46. Other possibilities, 20 VVT, 20 vartac, others????? Please give me your caliber and why. Thanks |

Is a 204 Ruger too long?

What 20 caliber
I would stick with either the 20-222 or 20 VT. Both would do you a fine job, for what you want and they both shoot very well, easy to load and find good groups with. You would not go wrong with either one. Bill K

Bill has it right in my mind.
20-222, 20VTT, and 20 VT works pretty good as well. |

L46
The 204 is too long for the L46 unless you can find one in 222mag(L469) with the longer mag box, even then plastic tipped bullets are generally not advised. It's not so much the action as you can shorten the bolt stop, it's the magazine length. I have L46's in both 20-222 and 20VT, the 20-222 feeds better. Even the 223 length of the 20TAC is too long for a std L46.

20cal for L46
Hello to all,
After reading this thread, does that mean that the .204Ruger is too long for the Sako L461 action?? I was thinking of going that way with a .20cal?! Thanks - JAY |

What 20 caliber
I believe the action is fine, length wise, etc. It is the magazine that is to short to work the 204 R without seating the bullet way down into the case. Someone will surely have measurements and know for sure. It might make a good single shot rifle. Bill K

222mag
Sako made 222mags in the L461, the actions were the same except for the bolt stop which is shortened to allow the case to travel further back. As Bill mentioned the mag box and follower are different and even then you will be limited to HP's, not any of the long tipped plastic bullets like a Vmax. Frankly it just doesn't make sense unless your looking for that level of performance with factory ammo. The 20TAC will almost duplicate those numbers, feed well and fit.

About the L461 action.....what Chuck said.....
Especially if you would ever want to seat bullets close, or into the lands.

L461 20/222
Hi All
It is interesting to read some of the posts re the L46. I recieved one a while ago in a gun amnesty here in OZ and was looking at what to chamber it inas the factory 223 would just fit, anyway someone mentioned 20/222 so I ordered a reamer from Dave Manson and was looking for load Data when I came across this post. Really keen to see how this will work on our local foxes etc? Cheers From Australia |
