Default Price Check on Sako L46 .222

Unfortunately I do not know much about Sako Rifles. The good ones were around long before I was born. This one in particular was the last year the L46 was made. Made in Finland I'm told. Between 1962 and 1963. These are the only 3 photos I have of rifle. Can anyone give me an idea on the value of this fine rifle. Have a gentleman wanting to trade me for it. I'd love to have a Triple Deuce, just don't want to come out on the short end with the trade. He claims with the right load gun will shoot 1/2" all day long.

I will add that from what I found this is a Vixen Model...NOT the Riihimaki. Action is marked "L46 No 549xx".

Default Sako

Condition is important, can’t tell from the photos.
I’m sure that is an aftermarket stock, nice but lessens the collector value.
I’d rough this one at $800-1000.

You can look on gunjoker to get some idea. I've only ever seen one of those in person. It was well used with an aftermarket 204 stainless barrel, a rinky dink scope, and some ammo. It went for $800 a few years ago.

Is the butt pad the dead give away on the stock?? I don't really like the recoil pad and looks like the LOP is long due to it. I would try to find a Sako Flat Pad to put on it.

I searched GunBroker and prices were ALL over the place that's why I came here. Figured some of you would have some better real world prices. Some folks on GB believe there items are Gold.

I'd pass on it if it has a 1-16" twist like some of the older Sako 222's. I had one and it wouldn't shoot anything above 40gr bullets. Wouldn't even stabilize a 50 grain V max.

Twist may be 1-14" which would be fine, but there are many out there with 1-16"

And price wise..............$650

20VarTarg, I believe that rifle was built in 1961, the last year of L46 production. As df06 notes, the stock, although very nice, is aftermarket. Most of the L46s had the word "Riihimäki" on the left side of the receiver, but I believe that some of the last ones only had "L46" and the serial number in that location. I believe the name "Vixen" started with the L461 action. Many Sako collectors value the L46 action very highly. They were beautifully crafted with a lot of hand work. I think, as df06 notes, I'd put the bottom price somewhere around $800, but I've seen them advertised for much more than that. It probably depends on how you value the stock. For a pure collector, its not being original would lessen the price. On the other hand, in many ways, it's a nicer stock--with much nicer wood--than typically seen on the L46s.

One suggestion: go on to the Sako Collectors Club (https://sakocollectors.com/forum/) forum and ask the guys there. That's where you'll find the real Sako experts. There is an L46 (from a few years earlier than yours) in completely original condition for sale there (with Weaver scope) for $850.

For sure an aftermarket stock. It looks in very nice shape.Do you have any closer photos of the bolt? I would say at least $800. Shoot's a 50 grain flat base if a 1-16. I saw an L46 go cheap on a forum recently, but it sold before the ink dried too, telling me it was way too cheap.

My 16" twist CZ Hornet would stabilize 50gr. SP Hornadys, but of course, not the longer 50gr. Vmax, which is normal.
There are some excellent 40 and 45gr. bullets out there that the 16" will stabilize just fine.
At .222 velocities, all of the 40gr. including the Nosler, along with Hornady SP 45gr. .223" and .224", the Hornady 50gr.SP's and likely Speer 50gr.SP.
