Default 17 centerfires in short barrels

hi all.
has anyone ever tried a 17 centerfire, in 12-16inch barrels?
im very curious as to what sort of energies or velocities they would kick out (ft lbs)

thanks

TC contenders have done so for years, also other like JD Jones and his handcannons. check their websites for information and cartridges.

+1 on what Bill said. Very short barrels have very obnoxious muzzle blast and flash. I have a 12" TC in 221FB and a 14" in 223 Rem. Fireball is the pertinent name and behavior. Years ago, a buddy had a H&K 53, chambered in 5.56x45 with a 8.5" inch barrel and full auto. Better wear ear plugs and muffs.

My H&R Ultra Wildcat in 17 Rem has a 20 inch barrel. We ran 25 Gr Hornady FBHPs over IMR4198 through the 35P years ago and were getting ~4050 fps.

The little bugger has a pencil barrel and shoots half inch groups. It launches rockchucks two feet in the air at 250 yards.

I found this on the internet and took the liberty of copy/pasting it here:

The Remington Catalog 2003 includes a "Centerfire Rifle Velocity Vs. Barrel Length" table that shows the following velocity changes for barrels shorter or longer than the test barrel length:

MV 2000-2500 fps, the approximate change in MV per 1" change in barrel length is 10 fps.
MV 2500-3000 fps, the approximate change in MV per 1" change in barrel length is 20 fps.
MV 3000-3500 fps, the approximate change in MV per 1" change in barrel length is 30 fps.
MV 3500-4000 fps, the approximate change in MV per 1" change in barrel length is 40 fps.

The 45th Edition of the Lyman Reloading Handbook also has a table showing Center Fire Rifle Velocity Vs. Barrel Length. Their figures apply to barrels between 20 and 26 inches in length and agree with the Remington figures. The Lyman table shows the following approximate velocity changes:

For rifles with muzzle velocities in the 1000-2000 fps range, the change in velocity for each 1" change in barrel length is 5 fps.
For rifles with muzzle velocities in the 2001-2500 fps range, the change in velocity for each 1" change in barrel length is 10 fps.
For rifles with muzzle velocities in the 2501-3000 fps range, the change in velocity for each 1" change in barrel length is 20 fps.
For rifles with muzzle velocities in the 3001-3500 fps range, the change in velocity for each 1" change in barrel length is 30 fps.
For rifles with muzzle velocities in the 3501-4000 fps range, the change in velocity for each 1" change in barrel length is 40 fps.

I would think that if you were to lose 200 - 300 fps that you would be OK out to handgun range. I bet there are probably much better options than the 17 Remington for a shorter barrel though.

On the CZ 527 American 17 Hornets w/22 inch barrels we are getting right at 3,600 fps with 20 grain bullets over AA1680. Tipped bullets do not kill rockchucks reliably past 200 yards, HP bullets are good for... maybe another 50 yards. I would be skeptical if the 17 Hornet out of a shorter bullet would be much good for anything past 100 yards with tipped bullets and 125 with HPs.

That being said, if I am going to shoot chucks and prairie dogs I want them DRT with with no question about it on any solid body hit.

I have a 17 Ackley Bee in a 10" contender barrel. The muzzle blast is obscene if the right powder isn't selected.

You might poke around on the IHMSA website and Specialty pistols for full value answers.
You will loose some speed, more in some, less in others. The old BS line of having to use pistol powders in pistol length barrels with rifle calibers is just that,BS.

Two rifle cartridges that make good hand gun length barrels are 30-30 and 308. Blasty, yeah maybe. Cut some of the length off of your vehicles exhaust.

The smaller bore, small cases loose very little to their rifle/carbine brethren. Faster powders, small cases, small bores optimum barrel length is less.

A 22 Hornet or 30 carbine in a 10” barrel calls for plugs and muffs. I know of a 22Hornet custom rig, 14” that will fling 50-60 grain bullets out to 200 with the best of them, barely staying super sonic though.

Opinions are like elbows, every one has a couple. I like my long range hand gun rigs, I just prefer a 6mm or larger.

Many years ago, I had several buddies that had rifles in 223Rem/5.56x45. I chronographed several of them ranging from 8.5 inches to 26 inches. We used NATO spec ammo and after curve fitting the data, found we averaged 29.2 fps per inch of barrel length.

Default Well...

I can say that my XP 17PPC with 18” barrel has 121 lbs of energy left at 1000 yards. Not much left for varmints but works on paper
The funny thing to me is with small calibers and shorter barrels like on XP’s and Contenders slow powder works better.Logically we tend to assume short barrels would respond better to quick burning powders, but the opposite is true.
