20-222 Plain Jane
I am looking for any info on the 20-222. I have scoured the site here and only found Bobcat or Duster info. I know Fireball has one as mentioned on 6mmBr but other than that nothing is mentioned. I am looking for the velocities with the 32gr VMax any pictures and other note worth items. I am really looking into a 222 based round but they seem to be as present as hens teeth. Thanks to those that post, Adam.

20 222
You might try looking under 20 VTT. (20 Var Targ Turbo)
It is also in Kindlers Terrific Twenties. He didn't have any 32 Gr bullets listed just 36 Gr Molly coated. But Todd loads them hotter than I care to. He had loads to 3900 fps +. The powders he has listed ar H4198, RL7 and N135.

Adam, I have a 20 Turbo..(with the full length neck)...What would you like to know?? I am getting 3785 fps with the 39 Gr. SBK and around 4000 fps with the 32 Gr. SBK. I have some 30 Gr. Ntx bullets but haven't shot any yet. I have been very impressed with it so far and I am in the process of building a 17 based on the same case design..... George

Well I am acutally looking for the data for the 23* shoulder and full length neck. I would like a no form 222 case. I have thought of the 20VTT but then again you have to form and trim, with the standard 20-222 simple neck and shoot. Much like the 20Prac.

20-222
I've always been told that velocities ran about 1-200 under Tac20 speeds and any powder than works in the Tac20 is suitable for a 20-222. I'm thinking about doing one on a Sako L461 because of the limited mag capacity and I know that 23 degree shoulder would result in slick feeding.

Like with the TAC 20 after you form there is no trimming. Is the 20 VTT shorter than a standard .222?

The VTT is shorter than a standard .222 Remington. 1.7" for the 222 and 1.6" for the 20VTT

Adam, I shoot the 20-222 as you know. I have a couple rifles chambered for it. I also shoot the 20 Thunderbolt which is similar to the 20 VTT. Any 20 based on the 222 case is dynamite, especially with the new Lapua cases (not the older crappy stuff that was subcontracted out). I only shoot the 32s in mine. 4000 fps is doable with good case life. Just fill the 20-222 case with N133, stuff it in there and you'll get 3900 fps. You'll get a little bit more in after the intial firing and ultimately get 4000 fps or so. For the 20 Thunderbolt (20 VTT) I use H4198 for 4000 fps as N133 is just a touch too slow for the slightly shorter case.

A recent 20-222 thread..
http://www.saubier.com/forum/showthr...ighlight=turbo
Though not exactly a "plain jane 20-222", there is no more work involved (for case forming), when using the shortened 204R chamber option, AND you use the throating reamer to allow use of the long neck of the 222. The 23 to 30 deg shoulder change is minimal in scheme of things. I love pictures...we need more pictures of the rounds discussed! Greg |

Al Pencin and I both have 20-222, mine on a Nesika with PacNor barrel and Al's is on a Bat also with a PacNor, using our reamer. Ours is a straight neck down job except we opted for a .230 neck so necks must be turned just a little. I have been using a 32gr Vmax with 22.8gr of VV133 for 3850fps. There's plenty of room left in the case if you want more. Buddy RicN made several kills at 500+ last year (kicked my a$$ with my own rifle, but I'll get even some day) with that load.
Kind of a butt ugly color, but I've learned to love it. It also now sports a Zeiss 6.5x20. |
