I read or was told, long time ago, that it was a blank in 44-40 cal. I believe the movie industry and those the supplied them with firearms and ammo used a 44-40 size case that was a blank and could be used in several of the 44 cal weapons, both rifle and handgun.. Bill K

I believe the rifle was a Winchester 1892.

It definitely was a Winchester M1892 with a custom forged/enlarged lever and a screw to be able to rapid fire. I think it was a 44-40, as that was one of the most popular chambering for the M92.

One thing is for sure, it dispatched a lot of bad guys!

Lucas would shoot anywhere from one to five of them in practically every episode, and considering how long the show ran that's a lot of perps, lol!

The number 1 episode was on today named "The Sharpshooter". No stunt double Lucas could throw some lead. Since I cast a lot of bullets always wanted a rifle/pistol same caliber. Mark as the kid did a good job acting his part, probably seen them all a couple times.

Having both pistol and rifle are a lot of fun. Started 20+ years ago with a Python and after another 5 or 6 years picked up a Browning 1892 carbine in 357. Don't shoot either much lately. The current combo is is Ruger Bisley and Marlin 1894 Cowboy Rifle in 45 Colt. The 45 Colt is a much more fun caliber. The Marlin is 24" full octagon barrel and has a Lyman 66 peep on it. It is much more accurate than the Browning.

Sammy Davis Jr. guest starred in one episode, as a trick shot artist.....who couldn't shoot at a man. NO stand-in's were used for Sammy's acting!!

Sammy may have been one of the best "big names", but.....according to legend.....Glenn Ford was the fastest draw.

Speaking of "The Rifleman," back in the day I had a Crosman CO2 BB gun that held about 30 shots, lever action, and could shoot about as fast as "The Rifleman." Many a chipmunk, many birds and various other small critters fell to that one!
