Default 5-R barrel

Any body got experience with one? Building a 8" 223 Wylde on a 700 using AR mags and pondering barrel options.

I've used 5r in 6mm. They work fine. Not sure if they're any better than 4g

Default 5-r

Buddy and I got great accuracy and excellent barrel life on 3 Broughten 5-RC barrels in 6.5-284, known as barrel burners.

A good barrel is a good barrel, I doudt very seriously you will tell the difference in other barrels you have shot.
I doudt you would know the difference from one to the other unless you ran a borescope down one and noticed the difference in the number of lands or configurations

What are these "configurations" you speak of?

What was the round count before accuracy started going? Mine is a standard 6 groove barrel sitting at 1k rounds. Accuracy is still fine but this is about when they’re supposed to start going downhill.

We never did notice a drop off in accuracy. Started to copper a bit more around 1500 so we pulled them.

I had a tight twist 224 krieger that would consistently pop heavy match bullets in a 223WSSM. Changed it out for an even tighter 5R and the same bullets work fine. So the theory is that the sharp square rifling was damaging the jackets more and causing them to disintegrate in flight.

I doubt you'd have any issues with a 223.
