LGS where I occasionally worked got in a few bricks of CCI 41 mil-spec primers, so I grabbed one. I want to compare firing pin strikes to CCI 450s. Both on fired cases and unfired just cycled through the rifle by a previously fired cartridge. Only way I can figure out is if I can find a small enough needle tip for a dial indicator or a micrometer which measures in ten thousandths with something similar.
Anyone got a better idea? This posted on other forums also. |

James Calhoon has a bunch of good data on Primers on one of the articles on his website, but I don't it has the CCI 41.
You could try using the micrometer approach you said but use a stereo microscope or a loupe/magnifying glass to view the enlarged image while measuring. You could also section/grind through the fired primer and measure the thickness of the cup itself. Also, there is no info on the brisance of the two primers. |

I don't know of any information regarding the various amounts of firing pin strikes on primers.
But if you are after the thickness of various primer cups, there is more than one chart showing those, on the internet. One is by Calhoon, and it can be googled up. ![]() |

Most people who hand load have sensitive scales. What if you take a fired primer, pull out the anvil, clean out the residue, then weigh the cup?
