Default Preferred barrels 17 caliber blanks/prefits?

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the preferred barrel companies 17 caliber barrels? I'm tempted to order a prefit, but wasn't sure if their quality in the small calibers is there.

I have not had a 17 cal from them, but have had 4-5 in calibers from 224 to 6.5 and each has been very nice and they all shoot and clean up easy and well.
Bryce is very good to talk with and will help you choose what you need.
Mine have been pre=fits, by the way.

Unless things have changed I think their 17 and 20’s are sourced from outside.
I have .224 and .243 from them, I am pleased with them.

I have several barrels from them in various calibers including 17 and all shoot great. I just installed a prefit in 6XC also but have yet to shoot it.

Pretty sure they are all Wilson blanks.

Five shots 100 yards. 32 grain V-max. Tipped bullets aren’t usually good for much better than .20 inches. Bench rest shooters around here told me they don’t use them for that reason.

20 Practical Preferred prefit on Howa Mini shoots quite well. Cleans fine. I’ve looked at barrels using a bore scope that had less machining marks, but I’ve looked at a lot more that had way more. I really don’t care what it looks like, so long as it shoots. We have a MGM Contender 21 inch tapered barrel in 17 Hornet that goes a half inch. I don’t see any problem with their small caliber barrels.

MGM/Preferred are very easy folks to get along with.

Thanks for the input. I'm considering ordering a 17 WSM RimX prefit now that they show them as an option. I think I'll pay the extra to get the barrel lapped.

I was looking at same action and chamber a while back, Walther Lothar offers a 17 WSM for the rimx, no need to worry at all then.

I think Greg w/Primal Rights has been using a lot of Benchmark and Lilja barrels on his TS Customs RimX 17WSM builds and those seem to be shooting really well.

Some guys have had feeding issues with other RimX 17WSM builds but TS Customs appears to have something figured out with their 17 WSM builds because they not only shoot very well but they don't seem to have any feeding issues. I don't know if it's a specific cut they're doing with their chambers or if it's how they have their mags setup but they have their 17 WSM's dialed in pretty well.

I have used Lilja barrels and they are pretty skookum. Probably the nicest barrels I own. It probably doesn't hurt that I used to see Dan Lilja at benchrest shoots fairly often and like him personally. I don't shoot in the matches, but go and watch the matches.

On my 580 project I mentioned that I wasn't in a hurry, it will probably take me six months to get a couple barrels from Lilja. The gunsmith converting my actions ask me if I had a problem with Douglas barrels. I said, no none whatsoever. He said he could have them delivered in a couple weeks. I told him to goa ahead and get them ordered.
