Default Quiet varmint round 200-300 yds

My question is what is a good QUIET round to shoot varmints with at distance of 200-300 yds. I have a new property to reduce the number of groundhogs on but the owners don't want much noise. There is a lot of potential for shots to 400 - 500 yards but, no noise. I went out last week with a 17 HMR and shot 20 out to 160 yds. I have a 221 fb a 20 vt 17 fb and larger cals. but they are loud, is there a cal. that would reach farther than the HMR like maybe a 22 hornet or 17 hh and still be in the noise range of a HMR or am I just wishing and hoping. No cans allowed. From what I have read I don't think that I would gain much with a 22 hornet but don't know as I have never had one. Open to all input. TIA

Several posts lately on the VHA rounds, with about 9.5 gr powder, reaching 3700 ish .
Might be an option. Good luck

17VHA would be my choice . If you can have a suppressor it would be very quiet . Very accurate also . I have built several 17VHA rifles and really enjoy shooting this round . The 200+ yard range is no problem . thx! Mark

My 22 hornet with 40gr bullet in a 24" barrel is just a tad louder then a 22 lr with 40gr bullet. Quiter then my 17 hmr.

You might take a look at the .20 Mink. It is a very good 200-250 yard cartridge with probably a little heavier bullet. I shoot 32 gr V-Max at around 3100-3150fps and 26 gr Barnes Varmint Grenades at around 3220fps. It's deadly on ground squirrels out to 250 yards. It is fairly quiet with no barrel heat. A Kevin Harrington design. He is very knowledgeable on the Mink and Squirrel series in .17, .20, and .22. He would probably suggest the .22 Mink as probably Adam (on the site quite often) would. They say the .22 Mink hits extremely hard with 40 gr bullets. Kevin likes it a lot for short range on groundhogs. 410gauge

Without suppression, most all 17 will be loud!
The larger the bullet diameter and with smaller powder capacity cases will give the most quiet shooting. My 243 HT (6mm 221) would be pretty hard to beat.
I also love the 25-20 cartridge for shooting vermin and being quiet. Though 300 yards would be really pushing the 25-20!
If your 221 has a fast enough twist, i would try a 75 grain Hornady Amax or 60 grain Vmax. The 60 gr. Vmax is an excellent bullet in the 221FB...My 1/12 twist 221's love the bullet and it is much quieter.

Default From subjective events, my observations:

I've mistakenly shot a number of calibers having forgotten to put in my earplugs.

17 Remington: loudest of the bunch. Shot one round at a skunk with a 17 Rem and no protection and had ringing in my ears for more than a week. This was with a 20 inch barrel. When shooting at our little farm range, my cousin said that almost a mile away, it sounded as loud as a 22-250.

223AI: Something of a favorite of mine, I've shot this several times by mistake (not one you'd ever make with the 17Rem) with no protection. No ringing, and subjectively behind the trigger (24" barrel) not unpleasant at all, for a single shot, at any rate!

17M4: Having shot a 20" barrelled one of these without ear protection 7 times at an escaping skunk with no protection, this event was so innoctious that it lead me to believe I could take that one shot with the 17 Rem above. Mind you, I don't do this sort of stupidity on purpose, only when I've been caught without the plugs or muffs by mistake. I'll discuss my choice of hearing aids later, probably a result of these stupid mistakes, but certainly a result of shooting Uncle Sam's 105mm Howitzers and 30-06 Garands back in the 50's without protection, and not helped by a lifetime of hunting quail and waterfowl, plus many rounds of skeet.

Max kill distance on a groundhog (MKDG) for me, 276 yards.

20VT: Certainly not louder than the 17M4, and my favorite varmint rifle at the present. MKDG for me, 320 yards.

221FB: Same family as the previous two, and about the same sonic footprint, with a slightly lesser "crack" due to lower velocities. MKDG, 150 yards, but not a rifle that I carry often.

17AH, 17HH: Good out to 200 yards on 'hogs. Even with max loads of AA1680 or VV N-120 less noise than the 221/20VT/17M4/17FB family.

22H: Never shot a 'hog past 100 yards with one, and quieter than the other 22H daughters due to lesser velocities.

If I was going to really be able to make more than a subjective evaluation, I should take my Radio Shack audiometer and put it beside me and actually record the peak reading for each.

Just my 2 cents. Probably worth about that.

Alex

Just perception with no scientific data, but I'd have to go along with Alex and say the 22 Hornet followed by the two 17 caliber spin offs - the 17 AH and the 17 HH.

17 Rem because of its loud sonic bullet "crack" is probably the loudest.

I second the 17VHA. It would be a great choice at those distances.
