Best carry varmint rifle and cartridge
In your opinion what is the ideal carry/walk around varmint rifle? I am trying to find something which is easy to carry and capable of 250 yard shots on groundhogs. I have tried many, but I have not found my perfect combination.

If I had to cut everything down to just one choice, I'd probably keep my Sako L461 sporter chambered in 222 Rem Mag.
I hope it never comes to that because I'd have to part with the L461 sporter weight rifles chambered in a couple of other cartridges that follow as close seconds..... JMO - BCB

Agreed. Mine is a Sako A1 in 223 Remington. Very close to bench rifle accuracy, but much easier to carry given the constraints stated (walk about and groundhogs to 250yds).

+2 on the L461, I have a couple of them in 222, one in 222Mag and one in 6X47. They are easy to carry, very easy on the eyes and accurate as all get-out!

I used to have an A1 in 6mm PPC. It had a 1-14" twist and it would not shoot the 70 grain Nosler ballistic tip like I had hoped. The hard as a rock orange recoil pad was not to my liking either. I used the Opti lock rings which were not cheap and did not allow me to use the scope I wanted to because of the ring spacing. I sold it instead of trying to change it. It was worth more to leave it alone. I do understand why people like the old Sako rifles.

For an off the shelf rifle that generally shoots well and won't break the bank, probably something like the CZ 527 American in either 223 or 204.

The CZ 527 is a good one and I have been down that road with 3 (223 Remington), 1 (204 Ruger), 2 (17 Remington), 3(22 Hornet) and 2 (221 Fireball). I always disliked the protruding magazine and I even tried 2 of the M1's and still couldn't like it enough to keep any of them. I've also never been happy with scope mounting solutions available for the platform. While I am complaining I will say I would be happier with a push feed system as well.

The CZ's are good one's for carry. You can get a reworked magazine that will fit flush, if you don't want the one's protruding, but then you only hole two rounds. Or you can get a single feed magazine and just feed one round at a time. But for carry and repeater the standard magazine is not all that bad.

The Remington LVSF came in a variety of cartridges, I really like mine in 221 FB. The only mod was adjusting the trigger, glass bed and change the shroud and striker as it was a J-Lock version.
Very nice and light, about 7.5 lbs with a Leupold 6x20x44 Varmint side parallax scope, well balanced and will easily shoot .25 with the factory fluted barrel. |

My vote is for my Sako L461 Deluxe in .222 Rem.
I own various others, but this rifle is light, accurate and a joy to carry and handle plus very nice to look at. Jim |
