700 barrel question
Picked up a take off 17 Rem barrel at a show some time ago. Here's the code.
? XB 3 ? ?W XU 64 Looking online it is a 1971 gun re-barreled in 1981? Gonna screw it onto an action and if it doesn't headspace fit some brass to it and see if it shoots. |

I think the early ones are all 1:10 twist. Try 20gr VMAX or 25gr HP bullets. 25gr VMAX might not work because of the twist. Most rifles need a 1:9 to use 25gr VMAX or 30gr.

O.K. Dies, 100 pieces unfired brass. Box of 100 20 gr V-Max.
Now to figure out which barrel date applies. |

You could screw it on and check headspace and whether it is long or short you could adjust it by the recoil lug thickness. Pacific tool & guage sells different thickness lugs. |

Why be concerned about the barrel date ? What will matter is if it will shoot accurately or not, then you may be rebarreling it anyway.

The 10" twist was only used for the first two years. So if it's an '81 I have a broader range of bullets to try. Also ran into a guy who had an early .17 Rem told me his was recalled for a new barrel, said he was much happier with it.
I had an 7 Mag with the SS blue barrel. It said stainless steel in tiny letters, don't see that on this one. Last edited by barretcreek; 02-08-2022 at 06:43 AM. |

Its very easy to check/verify the barrel twist rate.

You beat me to it. I would have checked that before I bought it at the gun show.

For $25? Cheap entry into a .17. Measuring with a patch has always been sketchy for me. At the time I didn't know there was a difference in the barrels.
