Default Remington 580 RF to CF Conversion

Anyone have any experience converting a Remington 580 to centerfire? I have one that is a Saunders conversion from the 90s, and have another that I'd like to convert to a .17AH. Help!!??

Dungheap

Be sure to check out the total overall LENGTH of the ejection port of the 580/590 series rifle, very very little room to clearance, have to lengthen the bolt travel slot/stop locations.

I set the end of the chamber at the forward end of the ejection hole, so I could have the maximum clearance for the Kit Fox cases, (when I made the NEW bolt end).
I have a 591/2 that was done by one of our members into a 22 hornet, very little room for clearance/ejections of LOADED rounds, fired brass no problems.

This is now waiting for a 17 Weasel Hunter reamer to get here and be made into a new home for the G-son, unless Grandpa likes it.

Do some checking etc for total clearance of loaded rds, using the bolt stop position etc.

Default Rem 581 conversion to CF

Contact Calhoon in Montana. He advertizes 19 caliber bullets and posts here and other sites. He has plans available to do the conversion.

I did one sort of based on the Calhoon drawings. Mine was in 22 Hornet. Mine would not eject a loaded round, but would eject an empty. It is easy to make a new bolt head because it uses rear locking lugs, it was fun doing it. Larry

I did one to shoot cartridges based on the 5.7x28mm case. I lengthened the ejection port so that a loaded round will eject without problems. This also makes it easier to single load catridges right into the chamber.

I used the Calhoon plans as a basis, but modified certain features to suit my needs. I also used a small Sako extractor on mine. This can barely be done when using the 5.7 case. I still haven't gone back to add an ejector yet, but am planning to at some point. I was thinking of using a Savage ejector, spring, and retainer pin if I can make them fit.

I currently have one barrel for this gun, and it is a green mountain 22 mag barrel originally meant for a 77/22 that I cut part of the shank, turned down and threaded to fit my action. I plan to acquire a 77/17 barrel at some point and make a 17vrap or kitfox on this same gun.

All told, including the rifle I have probably $310 into the project.

Can anyone tell me what the limitations on the 580/581/582 action is?

I picked one up last week and am intent on making it a center fire. I just cant decide on which.

Id like to do a 5.7x28 variant, as thi seems to be about the less amount of modifications, but, I cant find any info.

I have a heapin ton of 17 bullets and I picked up a wilson 17 rf blank on gunbroker, so Id like to go that route.

Is there a 17X28? Would this action withstand a 17 fireball? is the 17 ah as great as everyone makes it out to be?

One last question- would someone care to make me a bolt head for this thing? LOL.
