Default CZ 527-V 17 HORNET does suprise me sometimes

After years with my 527 American 22 hornet (and LIL GUN), I fell off the wagon and bought the 527-V in 17 Hornet. I have found CFE-BLK to be my LIL GUN for the 17 hornet but this was not where I was going.

After 2 months of being shut in (70 y/o so I am told I am at risk), I went out to my local range and dropped 15 clay pigeons on the 300 yard berm. There was a light changing wind of about 2.5 but sunny.

Off my rest I spent two hours and about 50 rounds breaking the birds and then the pieces. I was shooting the Hornady 25gr Factory HPs and they really performed. I had the gun zeroed for 100 and I used my ballistics chart to read "up 15" for 300 yards. The gun and chart matched and the first shot broke a bird. I ended up dropping 1 click when I got down to the poker chip sized pieces.

I was using a sightron 4x16 scope so I was about perfect on magnification. The gun matched the ballistics chart. The rounds held perfectly at 300 yards. What more could I ask for?

Is anybody working a 17 hornet beyond the 300 yard line? How about woodchucks at 300. I have never put a 17 hornet on a live target at anything over about 175. I will now consider 300 as my new working distance.

thanks for reading an old guys post.

The 17 Hornet in the CZ is amazing for sure. I know mine, in just the American shoots great.
Rock chucks, so far, I have only tried it around 200, but it is right on and puts them down. May try moving out further, even tho I must use the 15.5 lead free in my state now, it still works great.
And CFE BLK is my go too powder in mine also.

Default CFE BLK in 17H

How is this powder different from either 1680 or AA2200?

Thanks, Chuck

Only your rifle will tell you. Accuracy and FPS is what we are all after and the only way to find out, in yours, is try each and see. I guess you could say that is the difference.

Don't have a 17HH, but AA2200 is way slow for 22 Hornet. A full case of AA2200 will clock around 2100 fps with a 45 or 50gr bullet. It also sounds much quieter and duller sounding than with a faster powder. AA2200 and RL-7 are perfect for a 221FB size case.
