IMR Trail Boss Powder?
Would love to find some Trail Boss to make some reduced loads for the .17 hornet to do a little grey squirrel hunting in the fall but can't seem to find it anywhere?
Also what are your thoughts on reducing the .17 hornet for grey squirrel hunting? Like say around 1145 fps or just subsonic. A 20 gr vmax traveling at 1045 fps would give it 48.5 fpe, plenty for squirrels and very quite I would imagine? |

I'm testing some Trailboss reduced loads for the 17 Hornet using the 20gr Nosler FBHP SHOTS over the coming weekend... will report back!

Whos better than you!
Can't wait to see what you come up with? Are you going to chrony the shots? I wonder how low you can go before a copper bullet would get stuck in the barrel? The CZ527 American has a 22inch barrel. I hope I find some trail boss soon as squirrel season will be here before you know it.. |

You might also try SR4759 if you can't find Trail Boss.

Nice one TinMan Thx! I'm green at reloading so Trailboss seems pretty hard to screw up while experimenting with reduced loads but I will reseach SR4759 for sure...

I've found with trail boss you'll not reach over 1900fps. I ran tests with it last year in the hornet. It's accuracy is good but it's really really really slow.

My original intent was to see if I could find a Trailboss load that replicated the 17 HMR.. but my initial results were inconclusive, so retesting. Trailboss load guide specifies minimum loads as 70% of an uncompressed powder load measured at the base of a bullet seated to intended depth. http://www.imrpowder.com/PDF/Trail-Boss-data.pdf A fully fireformed PRVI 17 Hornet case holds 4.0gr Trailboss with a 20gr Nosler FBHP bullet seated 1 calibre deep to give good neck tension. The Nosler bullet gives lower pressures than the VMax in Quickload simulations... less bearing surface. Hopefully I won't discover the stick point 70% of 4.0gr is 2.8gr minimum load... and I won't be going anywhere near that!! |

The starting load I used (Accurate1680) for fire forming states 2900 fps. Just a guess but it would seem you can get down to 2550 to match the 17 gr vmax in the hmr or maybe even the 20 gr vmax at 2375?
I want to get the load down to subsonic if possible. Will be interesting to see the chrony numbers and your opinion on how far you can reduce within reason. |

I am a big fan of Trail Boss and have used it in everything from 460 Weatherby down to 17 FB and most everything in between.
I have not yet tried it in the 17 Hornet. I can tell you that in the 17 FB, max capacity just over 6.3 grains, that 3.7 grains of powder with a 20 grain Vmax bullet is doing 1819 fps with an SD of 23. (This is below the 70% but still makes lots of speed and I have tried as low as 2.8 grain in the 17 FB. I drop the load till I get the sound level and speed I want, while still holding 3/4" at 100 yards min accuracy.) In the smaller Hornet capacity case, I would expect the velocity to be about 2600 fps with 4 grains. In the 17 FB, 3.7 grains is a very accurate load and works great for low noise gopher shooting to 200 yards. I have not tried a full 6 grain load to see how fast I can get them moving because I want the TB loads for as quiet a round as I could get. Will be very interested to see your results in the 17 Hornet. |

4 grs. Trail Boss and 55 gr. BULLET IS SUBSONIC IN MY 223, as is 8 grs. In 243 W. with a 100 gr. Bullet. Not very flat trajectory though.
