Fireball case question
Has anyone compared volume/weight of factory Fireball cases (.17 or .22) to cases formed from 5.56 brass?

Have not but a data point, the Nosler brass has less capacity than the factory R-P Remington brand. I use VV133 and it's almost a neck full difference.

Just weighed 25 pieces of new Lapua 221FB brass and it ranged from 81-82gr with the vast majority weighing 81.1-81.2

Due to the higher pressure of military rounds, 5.56 cases have a thicker web, which would mean that a .223 case would have greater case capacity. By extension factory 221 Fireball brass would have more case capacity.
That said, there can be considerable variation in 5.56 case specs from different manufacturers and even the same manufacturer from one year to the next. The wall thickness and the case head/webbing thickness vary a lot. Also, the variation in OAL of case (trim length) may impact the case weight. You really need weight of cases empty and weight of case full to do apple to apple determination of volume. Is there a specific headstamp that you are interested in comparing to factory 221 Fireball? |

Osa. If the web is thicker, which we know it is, would that not mean there would be less capacity, instead of more ?
I don't bother to weigh cases, but just sort them by lot and then load each by what the pressure nodes show me and for accuracy first. |

Good point on headstamps. No, just thinking in such as small case it gets more critical. Given the situation on brass I am inclined to start with a batch of 5.56 and form my own rather than look for factory. Todd's books are waiting up at the POB and as I dither on what flavor the M7 will end up I gather the bits'n'pieces to make a bunch of brass. |

That's all I was getting at... might be some other factors in play. |
