Got to the range a few days ago to do some initial load scanning at 100 yds. Winds were 14-18 from the 2 o'clock and twitchy...the flags never stopped moving. Powders tried were Re15 and WW760, primers were Rem. 7 1/2s and cases were WW 223's with a light touch up on the necks to remove the high spots. After seating, the neck OD is .199 at the base of the Berger 25's. The F.L. sizing die is a modified .17 Remington that I shortened and opened the neck up to .195 with a carbide reamer. Chamber neck is .205. Seater is a shortened Wilson .17 Remington, bullets were seated with a .010 jam into the rifling.

Like any other .17 Remington I've had, it likes WW760. The Re15 was so-so, giving .5" five shot groups. Next time out, I'll lean on it a bit more, run some 2700 through it and chronograph it.

Honestly, if it never gets better than this, I can live with it. My suspicion is there's a bit more on the table as it seems to want more powder...another classic 760 characteristic of the big .17's.

Good shootin' -Al

Default Excellent!

Always loved 760/H-414 Al,seems to be doing well.AA2700 is also a good 17 Rem powder as you are aware and should do well in your neat rifle.Al have you tried the new Rel 15.5 in anything yet?

AI - I don't believe any of this until there is a photo of the completed rifle sitting on the bench at the range and a photo of you with a grin. "Selfie" time as my kids would say or for me it is more of a "Hey... can you take a photo for me?" - generational differences.

The Frankenstein 'slave' stock it's in is so ugly, it shouldn't be seen in public. But it does what it's supposed to do....give a solid platform to evaluate an unknown barrel of unknown origin for accuracy. A bit more load work and I'll get it into a more appropriate live varmint style stock.

Here 'ya go:

I don't think it looks that bad, results more important then looks.
