Angry Dangerous spam warning!

The PM that almost everyone has been getting may be a malicious attack. One member of the board got the PM this morning, did not delete it, however did open the PM, but did not open the link.

Having gone back to the forum, while he was still connected he went and got a cup of coffee.

Apparently a trojan horse had been injected into his machine, for when he came back his computer had been diverted to a porn site which he immediately tried to back out of. Minutes later his computer crashed.

He had not been able to get his machine to work since.

He was not using McAfee or Norton on his PC.

It has been suggested that the PM only comes when it actually detects persons active on the forum. The person that suggested that modified his profile to eliminate this indication.

Recommend that all

1. Modification their profile to hide their presence on the forum (the little green ball beside your name).

2. Immediately, upon getting the PM from "forumAdministrator" delete the PM without openning it.

Please report any occurence of this.

Default Instructions for modifying your profile

1 - in the instructiom bar above, go to USER CP.

2 - on left side of the screen go to SETTINGS AND OPTIOINS

3 - in S&P, click on USE INVISIBLE MODE.

I do not suggest that you disable the PM mode, especially do not disable it to the extent that you cannot get messages from the Moderators and Administrators. Should you do that and some controversial subject come up that one of the moderators or administrator wish to contact you off the board, you might end up baing banned over a misconseption of what a statement made in a post was inferred to imply. If problem with the "forumAdministrator" spam continues, Jim may be forced to turn off the PM mode or otherwise restrict PM ability to members or senior members.

Alex I did as instructed and still see a red ball by my name when I'm on the site, does that show up as active on the site or am I invisible even though I see the red ball?
Thanks again.

Default The red ball is for you...

and the Moderators/Administrators and for you to let you know that you have cut the green ball off.

The green ball is what appears otherwise.

At least that is what I think is the case.

Alex:
thanks for the explanation.

I opened the first one last week, fought trojan horses for days.
Couldn't get rid of them all it seemed like.
Finally my sytem locked up, after two trips to the shop. They got it
so it would go online, but, couldn't access anything.

Finally today I went to Comcast DSL.

Haven't been on board since at least last THursday or before.
just checked PM's as there was notice.
Had THREE from Admin and another.
Just del this time.

After reading your msg here, I'd bet that's where I got infected
last week.

Default Hiding your presence doesn't seem to work...

... but keep doing it, just in case.

Drew did it still got the PM, as have I. I'm not sure how the grand rascal (term used by elderly lawyers instead of "rotton s..!") picks and chooses.

Guys, there doesn't seem to be anything to be done at this point to prevent receiving these. Just delete them and be done with it. There is no need to notify the moderators every time you get one, we can't prevent it from happening.....thanks.
