Default OT Starting a new shooter

Yesterday we had a surrogate son and his family come for a visit, he was have trouble with his 270 staying zeroed. While he was checking his sights, his youngest son, Jake, expressed a desire to try to shoot. Jake's Dad told him to ask me if I had something that a young shooter could use. I did and took him into the gun room and gave him the first lesson in gun safety so he could carry the Stevens M15 .22 out to the test range. After we finished with the 270, we moved the bench up to about 10 yards from the targets and I put a golf ball on top of a 2x4 to give Jake a single target to shoot at. It is a rare privilege to be able to help a young man make the 1st shot of his shooting career.

I am showing Jake how the sights work, we then drew some pictures and practiced with the rifle.

We set up the golf ball as a single target to aim at. This picture was actually setting the target up for the second shot.

Father and son making lifetime memories.

One very happy shooter.

I just had to share this, the golf ball was truly a reactive target. After absorbing the bullet, it transferred the energy to the ball which bounced off the backboard flew over our heads to hit the Jeep's spare tire then bounced back toward us stopping about 10 feet from the firing line.. It was a very special moment for Jake, his Dad and the rest of us who were there to see it. Jake hit the golf ball each time he shot (2 shots more) before we were called for lunch.

Lowell, Just about perfect! Thank you for taking the time to teach a new shooter. As a Scout Master and Rifle Shooting merit badge counselor, I get a lot of opportunities to help a first time shooter. Most are just a little older than this young man. My only observation would be to make sure each shooter wear both hearing and eye protection. It is a small thing, but one that can have grave consequences. I see you provided some good hearing protection. excellent. Burt

Excellent and the Stevens M15 has been the first rifle fired by 10's of thousands if not 100's of thousands, my son has mine which was my first and later his first.
