Default S.S. Pins & Brass Cleaning

I see from Mntngoats Post below that Lonestar sells SS Pins for $7/Lb..... From the Lonestar Site , I see the SS Pins are 0.047 In. Diam & 0,255 In. Long. I have a Thumblers sitting idle somewhere in the Garage , and want to give the SS Pins a try . So here are my Questions : Will the above mentioned SS Pins work in small Cases like the 17 Mach IV and Tac 20 ? or is something smaller required ....and who sells them ? Is there a decent write-up somewhere on how to use the Pins ( wet or dry , etc. ) . TIA.

Check out this info on SS pins,
should keep you busy for an hour or so, LoL.

http://forum.accurateshooter.com/sea...&o=relevance&c[node]=2

I only use ss pins now,
I run 10#'s of pins for about an hour in my Thumbs tumbler,
I got my pins from UTAH, can't remember the brand name, STM pins ?

Edit info,
Here is the info for the STM pins, which are magnetic,
http://www.stainlesstumblingmedia.com/

I also use a large speaker magnet inside a zip lock bag, to retrieve pins,
works great.

Default SS pins

I suggest you confirm that the pins you buy are magnetic. This will allow you to pick them up with a magnet WHEN (not if) you spill them. Makes a big difference!

Default pins

I got a tumbler from Frankford Arsenal, and use the pin's it came with. Small Cal stuff comes out slick as a whistle. They also have a magnet that I just purchased but haven't tried yet

I to have the Frankford Arsenal Tumbler and magnet. All my small cases, 20 VT, 20 SCC, and 221 FB, all come out bright and shinny. SS pin cleaning is the only way to go for me.

Got a couple questions for you guys using the pins:

1. I have heard reports of guys finding notable amounts of 'golden glitter' left in the drum after cleaning. You gentlemen seeing this?

2. How do you store your pins in between uses? Do you keep them immersed or do you have to dry them? Seems like wet pins exposed to air would form some rust, even being SS.

As a rotary tumbler user, I have been curious about the pins for a long time. Just never been quite excited enough to hit the 'ADD TO CART' button when my walnut and Rooster Brite combo is still working.

Yes, the pins do cause some "fools gold" residue but brass does not appear to be damaged at all. One gentleman on another forum had one piece of brass that he threw into every lot of brass he cleaned and the brass was undamaged after dozens of cleanings.

I store my pins in the tumbler with the top removed. They dry without any rust that I have noticed.

I have not noticed any downside to using the pins.

I spread the wet pins on a towel and set it in the sun a few hours, then pick up pins with magnet and store in a plastic container. I pin tumble cases to get factory new clean and media tumble cases after a few firings before I pin tumble again.
