Need expert die guru advice
I have what I think is a home made die and it definitely has a homemade spindle expander assembly. I noticed that the spindle is slightly bent so I ordered a RCBS 17 caliber spindle hoping it’d work.
Well it threaded into the die body just fine but came up short (to deprime). Does anyone else make a longer 17 cal spindle that might be longer and similar to the RCBS? If not I may try cutting the top end off leaving enough threads for the spindle nut. I don’t need this die spindle as I can deprime with the universal deprimer and can body size when needed. Just like to get it repaired so I can quit thinking about it lol

No expert here, but Hornady does make a replacement stem, for 18/20 cal. It is long as mentioned, but not sure if the thread pattern is the same. call and ask them. Bill K

Seems like the RCBS 5.7 stem is quite long.
Not sure where the .17 cal pin/stem came from but it fits. I use this 5.7 die to size the body once I'm done. Sometimes cases have expanded just enough they won't chamber. SO I run 'em thru this as a last step to avoid problems. Frustrating isn't it? Why don't you just make one from drill rod Gary? You still have access to a lathe don't you?

Thanks for the helpful ideas, I will check on the Hornady - RCBS spindle. I forgot all about that one. Maybe call or rcbs and see if they have another version is this spndle that I just bought.
George haven’t been working on a lathe since 2012 (wow! Where did all that time go?) I keep getting purchase mentor help about buying one lol

Check with CH4D, I am pretty sure they make some variable lengths that will fit.

Thanks, both good thoughts that I might look into both... I even have a couple sets of ch4d die.
George I have one son Jon living in Denver. Another son Taylor and I have been discussing a of trip to CO for the three of us. We might have to stop in and say hello if we can make it work (another busy year with another wedding and rebuilding my woodshop). I called Hornady yesterday and was told that their American dies have a similar RCBS threaded spindle. He gave me the sizes, 10-32 x 3-1/2” and a 8-32 for the expander ball. Didn’t have time last night to check my die spindle size out but am thinking it sounds about right. I’ll find out later tonight.

Gary:
I expect to be around the place this summer. Ortho doc said Mon, end of month he'll fix this "loose" rotator then in 3 months put a knee in that I've been begging for since Aug '70. Know enough about that, it'll keep me from the pastures again. Only about 1 1/2 from Denver, right down the only ribbon there is. Would be great to meet you guys.

Well hope you have a good year of healing George. If we make it out your way then we will be sure to stop in and say hello. Maybe meet up with Matt and also stop by Kevin’s shop to finally meet him and his wife in person. That’s s big if though with all the things going on.
