I can’t decide 17 or 20 AH
So fellas I have a dilemma. I have a 77/22 hornet that I’m not happy with how it shoots. I own a 17 Mach IV also I have a 20 KillerBee. I would like to have a fairly light walking rifle for crows, woodchucks and maybe a fox. I would also like to be positive and think that there will be a prairie dog trip on my near future. Had one planned for last spring but that got derailed as I’m sure a lot of us have had happen this year. I would appreciate hearing from those who have experience with these two and the good and bad of both. Which one you prefer and why.
Thanks to all in advance for your thoughts. |

I would suggest the 17 AH or 17 HH for one and then in the 20 caliber get a 20 VT. Bill K

Hornet
I’ve been there with an inaccurate 77/22 hornet.
I had a 20 ah in a contender carbine. And I’ve had a 17 AH in a cooper single shot. Never shot the 20AH much. The 17AH was terrific on PDs as long as the wind was not too strong. I used 20 gr Berger HP, and Hornady 20 gr V max bullets. I’d go with the 17 HH or 17 AH. |

I feel like the 20 is better then the 17 in any cartridge you put it in. Just a personal preference of mine. I've owned a 17AH and was never that impressed by it. Everything I own in 20 cal impresses me. The newest being a 20 Mink.

I'm biased, and my preference would be one of each

Bill K pretty much said word for word what I was thinking.
Fwiw I have a heavy barrel 77/17AH (a CZ barrel rechambered by Kevin weaver in and it’s outstanding! I also have an equally awesome a CZ 17 HH heavy Pacnor barrel but I really enjoy the rotary clip 77/17AH and so happy I did it. I also have a 77/17 squirrel that didn’t work out so well (feeding issues)but I recently removed the barrel and now have a 20 caliber blank that will someday down the road will become either a 20 mink or a 20 Hornet.

I'd have it converted to a K Hornet and see if positive headspacing helps address your accuracy issues. If that doesn't work, send it to CPC. I have 77/22 VHZ that got the full CPC 22 K-hornet treatment and it's a honest 1/2 MOA rifle.

I like how you think... That’s exactly what I am wanting to do with this factory Ruger barrel I just reinstalled (after taking off the 17 Squirrel barrel).

It’s funny that you mention CPC I live in Mystic Ct. That’s were I was headed-just trying to decide between the 17 and the 20. It’s already a K and didn’t help at all. I’m figuring that it’s just a Ruger barrel thing I hope.
